Babies: 0 - 3 Months

3 1/2 mo old STILL not STTN... what am I doing wrong?

I'm so exhausted. My daughter is almost 4 months old and STILL wakes up every 5 hours for a bottle. Some nights I am getting up twice.  My son was sleeping 8-10 hour stretches by 10wks... and I'm doing all the same things wtih her that I did with him!!!

I've done the eat-play-sleep routine.  I've swaddled (although, now she will ONLY sleep on her tummy). I've done sleep training.  None of it changes her sleep routine at night.

Please, someone tell me what I'm doing wrong.  Tell me that this will end. I'm just losing it at work - falling asleep at my desk.

  • Ditto.  LO goes between 5 and 7 hours.  Looking forward to the advice!

  • Oh Doodle, I'm sorry.  I don't have any advice, but here are some toothpicks to prop your eyelids open with.
  • All babies are different. my pedi said only 50% of babies sttn by 4 months. I hope your time comes soon.
  • I know it is hard, but try not to compare.  My DD is nearly 3 months and if she sleeps a 5 hour stretch that is a great night for us.  I am out of my mind freaking exhausted too.  Your DD will get there.  I definitely don't think it is the norm for babies to be sttn by 6 weeks, like we see a lot of on here.  Post on the parenting board and you'll have people telling you their babies didn't sttn until 9, 10, 11 months or even longer.

I promise, she'll get there.  I was talkign about weaning from my lo's night feeds today, but she drains the bottle.  She still needs it.  *Sigh* hopefully not for much longer though.

I'd kill for that schedule! Mine wakes up about every 3 hrs. If you have tried what worked with your other child I think it's baby specific. Sorry

Soon to celebrate the day we met, even if the day before marks when we said goodbye.
  • hate to tell you this but I have a 3 year old who still wakes once at night.... 3 1/2 months sleeping 5-7 hours is great!! You are not doing anything wrong. ?But, believe me I remember the feeling and am not looking forward to the next year with my second daughter (she's 3 weeks now). ?Hang in there :)
  • I'd be happy with 5 hours at this point.  My dd is up every 3 hours.  Sorry.

This is the lesson every smug FTM with a good sleeper needs to learn!

Relax, you're getting ten hours at night with only one waking, that's pretty phenomenal, even for a formula fed baby. And if you need an unbroken night, you can have your husband give the bottle at night.

The no-cry sleep solution has some suggestions, but really, why mess with a good thing?

  • Oh, and caffeine is your friend!
  • I think a 5 hour stretch is pretty good, at least it would be for us. I think a lot of people expect too much when it comes to sleep and babies. She's still young, give her some time.
  • oh, and my first didn't STTN until he was 2. Yes 2 years old.
  • My DS still woke up at least once to eat at 3.5 months. What you are describing is normal.

  • I'm sorry but I don't feel any sympathy.  My DS is waking up 3-4 times a night and twice for a feeding.  I would kill for 5 hour stretches.

Sorry, but your first baby really spoiled you and now this one is normal.  DS is just about 4 months old and gets up 2x a night, 1x only if we're lucky/on a good night.  I'm thrilled with this.  DH and I only get up once a night each and sometimes one of us doesn't get up at all which is considered great for a barely 4 month old.  She'll get there and she isn't going to be exactly like your DS.  Caffiene and make-up will make you look rested, LOL!

Oh, I'm getting up more than for just feedings.  And she may go 5 hours between bottles, but that doesn't always equal 5 hours of SLEEP for me. She goes down for the night at 7 or 8... which means that she is 3 hours into her sleep before I even get to bed.

So, I go to bed, then I'm up 2 hours later for a feeding... then another time inbetween... then another feeding.   I love her to pieces, but I'm freaking exhausted.

  • I'm right there with you.  We're down at 8, up at 11:30, 2:30, 4, and 5:30; then up for the day at 7:30.  I just called our pedi to schedule an appointment later this week to talk about sleep.  The longer he's ever gone is once for 5 hours.  Thank goodness I'm not back at work yet.  Have exactly one month before I return to work, so I need to get this kiddo sleeping longer stretches in the next month.
  • Our kids are exactly the same. DS was sleeping 10-12 hrs by the time he was 10 weeks and DD has been getting up 1-2 times a night now for a few months (before that was 2-3x). You aren't doing anything wrong!! We too have tried everything. Both my kids are tummy sleepers and that has helped some. Some babies, like mine and maybe yours are just hungry more often. While they don't necessarily need that feeding at night, DD inhales it like she hasn't eaten all day. It will get better. Some babies just take longer to STTN...I guess our girls are those babies. Good luck, it will get better.

Thanks for this. It feels good to know that I'm not alone. Good luck with your daughter. Cute kids!!

  • I feel your pain.. My DS slept through the night last night for the first time..

Usually he is up 2 times before the day starts and usually will only eat 2-4oz...
