How do you KNOW your baby is using REAL words

For instance, we could have sworn last night that Mady said "night night Daddy" but how can we really know?  She is a babbler and has been since 9 months and sometimes it sounds exactly like a certain word.  Other times it doesn't.

Where do you draw the line?

  • She's a genius! =D You know her best. If you can understand her and it's in context then I'd say it's a real word.

  • I'm with you - it's hard.  On Mother's day this year, it sounded like DS said "I love you, daddy".  Since he was so young, I had no question about the "I love you" part being babbling that just happened to sound like it, but I wasn't so sure about the daddy part.  I think I finally realized he meant mama when he actually looked at me, I knew he wanted something from me and he said 'mama'.  Not that that answers your question....  I think he's starting to say 'nana' for banana, though - he's used it several times after we say banana, or when he's eating said fruit.

  • I look at the context and/or if she uses it consistently.

For example, the first phrase DD said was, "I wan cheese!"  I was pretty shocked and think I said, "EXCUSE ME!?"  So I went and got a piece of cheese and said, "This?  This is what you want?" and she said "Yesh."  I hear this phrase now approximately 5839158198531 times per day so I'm pretty sure that's what she means. ;)

This is what I'm thinking too.  I'm just so impatient, I hate to wait until tonight for her to do it again!  It was really cute though.  And awesome even if it wasn't "real"!
