For instance, we could have sworn last night that Mady said "night night Daddy" but how can we really know? She is a babbler and has been since 9 months and sometimes it sounds exactly like a certain word. Other times it doesn't.

I look at the context and/or if she uses it consistently.
For example, the first phrase DD said was, "I wan cheese!" I was pretty shocked and think I said, "EXCUSE ME!?" So I went and got a piece of cheese and said, "This? This is what you want?" and she said "Yesh." I hear this phrase now approximately 5839158198531 times per day so I'm pretty sure that's what she means.
This is what I'm thinking too. I'm just so impatient, I hate to wait until tonight for her to do it again! It was really cute though. And awesome even if it wasn't "real"!
