NER: Someone stole my old insurance info

At least that's all I can think.  I sent a letter into the company cancelling service and have never been sent a bill, but I just received an explanation of benefits under my maiden name for a service rendered in CA in May.  We've been in MD the whole time.  And I'm certain I've never been to "LA Laser."

So what do I do from here?  Just call the company and try to get it resolved?  I hate the idea of doing that since I have a horrible signal at home.  I'll have to do it while out and about sometime.

I just don't understand how I never received a bill or anything from them and my policy is still active and being used by someone else!  And it was sent to the right address, so that's strange as well.

ARGHHH

  • Before I jump to the conclusion that someone is using your insurance I'd just call the insurance company to verify that they received your cancellation notice and ask what service rendered in CA was because you don't live there nor have you been to that office listed.  See what they have to say.  Good luck and I hope this doesnt turn into a nightmare!

  • Oh yeah, I should add that this insurance hasn't been active since I got married in 2006.  It was an individual PPO plan.  We still have a residence in CA, but have been living in MD since Dec.

Crazy sh!t no matter what caused it!

  • Yeah, I would call the insurance company - hopefully it's nothing.  That happened to me a few months ago.  I got an EOB for some prescriptions filled in a state I have never even visited.  By the time I called the insurance company it had been taken off - it was a fluke, something about the policy number being entered wrong.  I was (and still am) suspicious and make sure I log on more frequently but I was happy to know that no one stole my insurance policy identity.
  • aww man hopefully it's just a computer mistake...and not something thats going to turn into a nightmare....call them!!!
