Re: what do you all do for work?

  • I'm a science/math teacher.  Prior to getting my teaching certification, I was an accountant. I finished my certification and master's degree a few years before starting a family, but for the past few years, have been taking additional graduate classes to boost my salary.  I've taken 30 credits in 3 years and am now done.

My husband is an IT Manager with a degree in Business Management and an MBA.  His schooling was finished several years before the twins arrived.

  • I coordinate a summer program for middle school students at a university. I was a classroom teacher for about 6 years and wanted to move beyond the classroom but not become a principal/something related. Even though the summer is crazy for about 7 weeks, the rest of the year the position is very family friendly, so I thought it would be great while we were planning for #2.

I completed the final class for my M.Ed. when DD was about 4 months old. DH is at an IT consulting company, which didn't require an advanced degree, so his education (for the time being) was completed well before kids came into the picture.

  • We are both residents just starting our final year. My husband will do a 1 year fellowship after residency but my training will be complete (thank God!)

  • I'm a Marketing Manager & DH is a Procurement Manager.  We both had 10 years of climbing the corporate ladder before DD was born.  And we both have college degrees.
  • Me: Human Resources Manager.  Got my BS years ago in Political science.  I thought about an MBA several times over the years but just never made it happen before the kids.

DH:  IT.  Degree not required but now that he is getting more senior the degree is helpful with getting new positions.

  • Me:  IT Director though the real fun work begins when I get home to be with our little man.  Got my degree 10 years ago (yes, I'm old! Wink ) in Acct, and my masters in MIS. Hopefully won't be going back to school anytime soon.  :)

DH:  He's a pilot, though he has a degee and masters in engineering.  Was an officer in the military prior to us getting more settled.  Stick out tongue

  • I work in public relations at a university, right now I'm working part time. I have a Masters degree that I completed 4 years prior to having DD.

My dh is an attorney, he also recieved his degree 4 years prior to DD.

  • I am account analyst, finished school with a associates? before DS.  My DH is a plumber and now in school to get his plumber license (required by state law)

  • Me: I am an engineer for a school district. I am in charge of code compliance and capital reserve projects. I have my BS in Mechanical Engineering, graduated December 2002. I also have some advance credits in education, which helped me get this job.

DH: Is a control engineer for a major brewing company. He has a BS in Electrical Engineering, graduated December 2000.

Both our positions required our degrees.

  • Me: program manager at a large software company.

DH: software development engineer at the same large software company.

Both of us had our current degrees long before DD came along. DH has an associate's. He had to drop out of college midway through his bachelor's, and still doesn't have it. Obviously, he was able to get his job without it, and at this point, he has so much work experience (nearly 15 years! he went to work in this field as soon as he dropped out of college) that his lack of a degree really doesn't hinder him. But he hates that he doesn't have it, and is taking classes through University of Phoenix to get it.

I have a bachelor's. I probably could've gotten my job without my degree, but it's still a nice thing to have. I've thought about going back to school to get an MBA, but I don't know that it's worth the investment of time/money.

Mommy to DD1 (June 2007), DS (January 2010), DD2 (July 2012), and The Next One (EDD 3/31/2015)

  • I work in corporate training for a large insurance company.  My husband also works for the same company.  We both have degrees (required).  My husband is also an adjunct professor teaching insurance.

  • I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).  I finished the required Master's degree prior to TTC and passed the test to get my intern license.  Didn't accumulate enough hours (3000) of counseling to get my license until after DD was born.  DH is an architect.  He got his Bach. of Arch. and passed all 9 (!) tests to get licensed prior to DD's birth.
  • Me: RN- graduated with my BSN before getting married. Currently in grad school I should graduate in 2 yrs.

DH: he is a supervisor worked his way up no college degree but would need one now for the same job.

  • I'm an accountant.  At least a Bachelor's degree is required but I have my Master's.  And yes, I was finished college before I had children.  That was very important to me.
  • DH and I are both MD's.  I finished 3 years of my residency, and started a 2 year fellowship a couple of weeks ago.  DH still has 2 years left of his residency, then one year of fellowship.
  • I'm an assistant state's attorney.   My job required bachelors, law degree and bar pass. I finished all of that at 24 (silly me not taking time to smell the roses) and have been practicing 10 years.  DH is a 2nd year resident.
  • I'm a writer with a large international NGO. I have a master's.

    DH is an M.D. (neurologist).

We both completed our degrees (and DH, his residency and fellowship) before having DD.

Immense respect to those who continue schooling/intensive training with kids. I can't imagine!

  • I'm a school counselor and headed back to work in mid August.  I finished my MA in counseling right after DH and I got married in 2005.  My big goal was to complete my state licensure (LPC) before kids.  I finished it almost a year before she arrived.

DH is a pharmacist.  He finished pharmacy school two years ago.  It was a must for him to finish before kids.  We depend on his salary!

  • I'm an operations manager in a capital markets division of an international financial group (aka, a big bank).  I have a BS in history & secondary ed, and a law degree.  I just kind of ended up here.  It is possible to work your way into the field I'm in, I manage a mixture of college grads (finance, accounting majors), paralegals, and high school grad "old hats" who've been here forever & worked their way up.  The best way to get into this field is to get a paralegal certifcate & take some courses in finance & accounting.  Get a job at a bank and you can move up fairly easily, if you're willing to put in the work & get the education needed.

DH does techy stuff.  Telcom and internet.  His resume is so varied, I don't even know where to tell you to start.  He has some college, but never graduated.  I can tell you that ANY education is better than none!

  • DH and I are both lawyers at law firms.  I graduated from law school 8 years ago and DH graduated 7 years ago.  This will be our first baby, so we both worked for a while before having kids.  I plan to stay at the same firm once DC is born, but work a reduced hours schedule (25% reduction).
  • I work in television doing research marketing & digital. My DH works in the arena industry as a operation manager. We both have college degrees.

  • Me: I have a Bachelors Degree in Marketing that i got in 2001. I am currently in grad school and started in Jan 07 and will be done in Dec 09. I work full time for 5 years now doing New Product Development for a large scrapbooking / stationary / kids craft  company. I do sourcing and pricing and new product ideas for the scrapbooking department. I needed a Bachelors for my job.

DH: He also got his Bachelors in 2001 in MIS. He currently works for a large national bank and is an AVP of the MIS department. He needs his degree for his job as well.

  • I am in the Army, I had to go through Basic Training and a job training school, I have an associates so far, working on my BS.  I was done with my Army training before I had my kids, but I am still going to school now and continue to have to take Army schooling to advance my career.
