this happened to us too this month. It's HOT and we have had guests for a few months now so we are blaming that. Hopefully it will go back down next month because it was insane!
Also check your rates. We're in an unregulated area and my 6-month lock ran out without me noticing and our rate went WAY up when it rolled over to the month-to-month rate.
Plus, if summer is just hitting for you, it's almost expected. Ours doubled between May and June because we went from no A/C's on to two.
This has happened at both my business and my home. In both cases, the meter reader "couldn't access the meter" (read: was a lazy turd), and the power company "estimated" the charges due. Uh huh. Nice estimation -- 3x the normal bill.
I just had them come out and do a physical reading and they adjusted the bill.
this happened to us this month too. our a/c is running alot more because it's so much hotter. it happens every year at this time...it sucks. but we are now turning it up to 83 when we leave the house for long periods and we signed up for FPL's oncall program where they can turn off our A/C, heater, and water heater for up to 3 hours every day (they don't normally use it) and they credit us $10-15 every month for it, even if they don't use it. So, maybe your power company has a similar program?

Good luck!
We've had the same issue. The gas company likes to try and do the same thing too.

The lazy reader didn't read ours in December so they estimated them. We have two services one is just my DH shop since it has wood heat and all we have are lights in there they estimate for a house means I still haven't had to pay. We have about a 10 month credit and they wouldn't change it.. It makes me mad that they messed up and I had to pay the bill or a late fee thent hey only give a credit.

I just got our bill today and it is almost double last month's (so two months in a row it has doubled). The weather is totally to blame for us. It's been freakishly hot and we have an old house that needs some energy efficient upgrades. The usage is in line with what the previous owners used during the summer peak.
Re: any idea why my power bill would double?!
a/c???
Fees going up??
That stinks!
