NBR: Recommend your SUV!

We currently have a Ford Escape Hybrid and are having a lot of problems with it.  We're thinking about shopping around for a different one.

Any good recommendations?  Gas mileage is important, but I recognize I may have to compromise a little bit since we don't want to spend too much.

So far we've looked at the Toyota Highlander & Honda Pilot.  Thoughts?

TIA!

  • You can never go wrong with Toyota.  My husband and I currently each have Toyotas and they are great cars that last you a lifetime and rarely give you problems.  We've looking to buy an SUV and have looked into the Toyota Highlander and they are amazing cars, but we've read better reviews and are aiming more towards a Nissan Murano or Acura MDX.  If you like Hondas the Honda CRV is also a good SUV to invest in.

  • I have a Ford Freestyle and I love it. ?It's roomy and I have the 3rd row if I need it.?

However.. if I were to go trade in today.. I would get a Flex! ?I want one so bad :) ?

  • We only buy Toyota's. Right now we have a corolla sport and a 4-door tacoma. You can't go wrong with the highlander. My friend has one and LOVES it.
  • Sounds like you're looking for a mid-size. We bought the subaru Forester and are in love with it. I've got 10K miles on it and average 24mpg. It may be too small for waht you're looking for though.

    ?

I loved the Muranos but DH nixed it after he rode in the backseat of one and he said it was horrible! ?

i have a Jeep Commander & i LOVE it. the gas sucks- but i think that's a given with a jeep so i deal- but otherwise i have no complaints.
  • DH and I LOVE our Murano. It drives really smoothly and is very roomy- it also gets decent gas mileage.

My mom has been driving a Pilot for years and loves that as well.

  • I drive a Hyundai Sante Fe.  I've had it for three years and I still LOVE it!  It is the perfect size for us (seats 5) and our two big dogs can fit comfortably in the back cargo area.  It has an extra safety latch in the roof for a baby seat too.  It averages around 20 mpg which I don't think is too bad for an SUV and you can't beat the warranty and 5 years roadside assistance they come with.
  • We have a Dodge Nitro and I LOVE it!
  • We have a Tahoe Hybrid and a Denali (they are pretty much the same).  I love them both!
  • I have a 4Runner and LOVE it!  Gas mileage isn't the best though (23 miles average I would say).  My sister has a highlander and really likes it.  I have two large dogs though and the baby coming so I like the room of the 4Runner.  My husband is a toyota fanatic.  I used to be a jeep girl but now we are a toyota fam.
  • We have a Dodge Journey (cross-over) and it's awesome! It seats 7, but with the 2 rear seats down there is tons of trunk space, the gas mileage is better than my crappy Sunfire, and there is tons of storage (under the seats, under the floor, back of seats).  Love it!
  • We went with the Traverse after looking at the Highlander.  I only every bought toyotas and ran 2 camrys and a corolla into the ground.  I liked the highlander, but was not happy with the "3rd" row seating as it was very small, and I didn't like how you got into the 3rd row.

You didn't say what size suv... If you want only 2 rows, a highlander is ok, but if you want 3, look at the sequoia.  For use the Traverse won out either way.  FYI it's the same as the arcadia, and the encliave

  • I drive a Honda Pilot and LOVE it. It has the 3rd row seating, but currently I just keep it folded down for extra space, but it is nice to know it is there if I need it. Fuel mileage is OK. Drives great and has AWD (necessary in Minnesota!). I highly recommend it.

  • I don't have an SUV, but I have a Dodge Caliber. It is a great size. When I got it I hauled around 2 kids- 7 and 9- all summer long with a couple of their friends. I also watched my newborn nephew last summer and it was big enough to carry his stroller and everything. It gets about 30 mpg and I only paid 18,000
  • We have a Hyundai Tuscon, it's a great smaller SUV. Gas is really good. If you're looking for something bigger, the Hyundai Santa Fe is *really* nice. We looked at Hondas and Toyotas and settled on a Hyundai because the quality really is the same, but the prices are certainly much, much cheaper.

  • We just got a crossover SUV as DH's new car, a Ford Edge.  It has amazing ratings on JD Power, rides awesome, is very roomy, and very comfortable.  We love it.  I highly recommend it!

  • I am driving a chevy equinox and I like it. It is not flashy but I have had compliments on it. It is pretty good on gas. I have a friend whos dad owns a auto wrecker and they fix, drive and then sell cars all the time and he told me in the last 5 years he has been doing this, the best vehicle he has driven was a ford edge.
  • We have a hyundai Santa Fe and love it.
  • I highly recommend any VW. We had a EOS and are getting our Passat Wagon this week. If we could have afforded it, I would have gone for the Touareg. After our first VW, we are now committed for life! They are really great vehicles.

  • I love, love, love my Nissan Murano.  And I love that it has all the side-impact airbags and other great safety features.  It drives wonderfully.  One day when this one gets too old, I will get another one in a heartbeat.
  • We actually just traded in our 2005 Honda CR-V for a new 2009 Toyota Rav-4. We looked at the Hylanders, but like previously said the third row almost seemed like a waste as it was impossible to get in and out of. The newer Rav-4s are a lot bigger than the older ones and there is a ton of trunk space. The price and gas mileage were unbeatable so thats what we ended up getting and we love it!
  • i love our 4runner.

i have a camry hybrid and i would love if the highlander hybrid didn't cost so much or they made the rav4 into a hybrid.  ever since getting great gas mileage in the camry (avg 425 miles on a tank of gas), i couldn't imagine not having one.

DH and i do love our toyotas!!

  • I love my Ford Edge.  It gets pretty good mileage (avg 20, but I city drive) and is really roomy.  I've not had any problems with it.
  • I have an 07 CRV, and I love it. ?The gas mileage is ehhhh (I get about 17 mpg street) but it is a great car, and it is pretty roomy.

  • DH has a Hyundai Santa Fe, and we've been really happy with it.

It gets decent gas mileage, isn't too terribly big, has an amazing warranty, and you really can't beat the price point. You can get a brand new Santa Fe for a similar sticker price as a 3 or 4 year old Highlander. It's one of the best small SUVs according to Consumer Reports.
