Happiest Baby On the Block more than S's?

Does the Happiest Baby on the Block book talk about more than the 5 S's?

I was wondering the same thing - curious to see what others have to say.

  • If you're looking for technique, no, not really.  If you're looking for information/theory on colic and why your baby may be behaving the way s/he does, then yes.  I loved this book and I found all of the information in it to be valuable in getting through a very difficult time with my LO.

  • We got the dvd... I'd rather see him do it than read it. We didnt end up needing the techniques but it was interesting.
  • What I found most useful about the book was a) the variations on each of the S's that you could try, i.e. different forms of white noise that might work for shushing, and b) the fact that shushing or swinging needs to be fairly vigorous (understanding the line between vigorously rocking and actually shaking your baby) to actually calm the baby, and can then get more gentle as the baby gets calmer. I wouldn't have known that.
  • Yes, it goes a lot into colic, why babies cry/fuss, etc.  Don't get me wrong, the majority of the book deals with the 5 S's (which I think are lifesavers), but there's tons of information in there about what drives babies to cry, be upset, etc.  Well worth a read IMO.
