First night in crib-suggstions please!

Last night Brynne slept in her crib for the first time. We have had her in her bassinet since she was born, but she is starting to get too big for it.

While it could have been worse, Brynne woke up crying 4 or 5 times in the middle of the night, which is very unlike her.  When I went in, her eyes were closed and her head was pushed up against the wooden slats. Each time I would move her back to the middle of the mattress and put her pacifier back in. She would fall back asleep right away.

My initial thought is that she is rolling against the slats which is waking her up. I'm tempted to put her bumper back up, but am afraid one time she will roll her face against it.

I should also mention that we still swaddle her in the Miracle Blanket at night... which she always breaks out of by morning. (We use the SwaddleMe's for nap time and she breaks out of those as well). After she is sleeping well in her crib I want to wean her from the swaddle as well.

Any suggestions to keep her from rolling against the side? A sleep positioner perhaps? Would you put the bumper back up?

 TIA!

  • Oh no!  I know she's a good sleeper so it sounds like a tough night!  I personally would wait it out a couple of days & see what happens.  Ethan scooted up to the rails and kept waking up too but he eventually stopped.  Now he rolls over to his side and I would not feel safe with a bumper in b/c his face is close to the sides of the crib some nights.  Good luck!!!

  • I would agree with Christina that maybe giving it a few days will help.  That is GREAT that she goes right back to sleep though!  When we transitioned J into the crib, he would get his legs and arms stuck through the rails and SCREAM.  I never intended on using a bumper but after a few days, we put up the mesh, "breathable" bumper from Babies R Us.  It is much more padded than I thought it would be, but I do feel ok using it because it is still very flat, in case his face would get against it.  GL!
  • I don't exactly have any advice for you except to say that I put Olivia in a positioner AND swaddled her and she still is up against the rails in some way every morning when I go to get her.  Since we have the video monitor I can see that she raises both of her legs and smacks them back down on the mattress and that's how she moves around.  However, none of this seems to wake her up except once when she got her whole leg stuck.  I too have struggled about putting the bumpers back on especially when her leg was stuck but am reluctant as her head is always so close to the side of the crib.  I would give it a few nights for her to adjust to sleeping in a room alone though.
  • Sorry I don't have advice to offer, but I thought I'd share a "tip" one of my friends shared with me.

She told me her baby slept better when positioned in the corner of the crib, rather than the middle.  Not sure how much truth there is to it, but the rationale is that putting baby in the corner, secured with a couple of rolled receiving blankets on either side to keep him in place, provided a more secure sleeping environment because it resembled (as closely as possible in a crib) the tight confines of the womb.  There is a school of thought that says a baby placed in the center of the crib is scared by all the open space and a sense of falling.

    Good luck!!

  • Thanks for the advice ladies. I'm glad to know it will get better. I just felt so bad for her! I wouldn't like my head smashed up against hard wood either. Hopefully tonight will be much better. Next battle = getting rid of the swaddle!
