Sleep help

Allie is still waking around 4 every night to eat.  She sucks down a full 4 ounce bottle.  Is this something she will eventually not need anymore... or am I supposed to do something to stop the night feedings?  I try to just soothe her, but she is obviously very hungry.  Just curious.

Re: Sleep help

  • At her age, I definitely wouldn't worry about it. The fact that she's draining the bottle means she's probably just not ready to go a whole night without a bottle. We didn't stop night feedings until around 10 months, but Maddie is small and won't drink much in one sitting. In fact, at 4 months I'm pretty sure Mads was still getting multiple bottles at night.

When she started not finishing her middle of the night bottle on a regular basis, we weaned her from it by waking her up (instead of waiting for her to wake us up) and feeding her 3 oz, then 2 oz the next night, then 1 oz the next night and then we didn't wake her the next night. She must've been ready to drop it b/c she never woke up again at night after she was weaned.

  • It's strange though... some nights she sleeps til 6.  Like this morning... she slept from 9:30-5:30.  Last weekend, she slept 3 nights a row til 6 (but we were at the beach).  So that's what makes me wonder if she really needs it.

  • I would try to soothe her first before feeding her (which it sounds like you do).  If she still acts hungry, then feed her.  She might be "working" on dropping the feeding, and some nights she needs it and others she doesn't.  It might not necessarily happen all of a sudden.  She was probably so drained at the beach from all the activity she slept through her hunger cues.  I wouldn't worry about doing anything to intentionally wean her from it unless there are signs she is just doing it out of habit, and from what you've said, that's not the case.

Eli dropped his night feeding around Allie's age, and at the same time he started eating more during the day, like at least an ounce more per feeding.  But we didn't force that, we just followed his lead.

  • Camryn took an overnight bottle until after she started solids around 4 am every night.  It wasn't until she was about 4.5 months old when she finally dropped it on her own.  Hopefully she will drop the feeding here soon.

That's where we are, at almost 5 months. He goes to bed usually around 8, wakes up at 12 and 4 to eat. He is definitely HUNGRY when he wakes up! I have stopped stressing about sleep/feedings. I just follow his lead and do whatever. I know he will sleep through the night *eventually*!!!

  • Like others have said, I would keep feeding her if she's waking up for it.  Natalie was still getting up 2 times a night at 4 mo old.
