How did you decide...

On stuff to keep around in case you have another child.  We arent 100% sure on a second - but we have some stuff I am refusing to get rid of -- like the swing and the playmat.  But the rest of the stuff...do I really want to hold on to it all.

For example, I have a diaper box full of bottles.  Now thats a lot of money in bottles and nipples, but do I really want to make room in my house for all this?  I have BOXES of clothes - I have one box of stuff I know I cant get rid of clothing wise, but the rest...I dont even know where to begin to start if I were to sell it.

So enough rambling -- what things are on your list of must keeps for #2 and what things are you willing to part with?

Re: How did you decide...

  • I have kept the majority of what I have.

I did get rid the the bathtub, it was useless to me. I dont keep any of the clothes unless i LOVE them. So I go through what he has outgrown, and make 2 piles. One that can go to consignment etc, and the other I get those vaccum bags and they store nicely since the air is out of them.

The rest of it is pretty much staying. I had to go through some of our storage sutff to make room for all of it. Once I did that the storage we had improved! GL!

  • I am keeping everything. The only things I have gotten rid of are my Bjorn and Moby wrap, and that was for an Ergo. I got all gender neutral stuff on purpose incase the next one is a boy. Thankfully the majority of our big stuff was gifts and I know the second time around we will also get a bunch of stuff, so once we are done with #2 I'm selling!! If #2 is boy, I'll sell what was not gender neutral, like clothes, blankets, bedding, etc. Now as long as DH decides he doesn't want 3 we are good!

  • I'm having the same dilemma, and we KNOW we're going to have another one day.  The big stuff is pretty much a given, like the pnp, swing, jumparoo, etc.  It's the little stuff I can't decide about, like clothes.  I like jenn&tim's idea of sell it if you don't love it.  But DH thinks we should save everything.  So, like you, right now I have boxes full of clothes.

I decided to sell my bottles.  The main reason is that where we store things gets pretty hot (basically a crawl space upstairs), and since they're not BPA free I didn't think it would be a good idea to reuse them after that long in hot storage.  Even if they were BPA free I would be iffy about that.

And I have gotten rid of things that we never really used for Eli, or things that were given to us as hand me downs that we never really liked or needed.  And some things I just didn't feel the need to keep, like the bathtub.  I felt like it would just get yucky in storage, so I passed it along.

  • I have tons of stuff, I just feel like i need to purge some of it...especially since we dont know IF or WHEN we will try again.
  • Unless I was going to have them relatively close in age, say not more than 3 to 4 years apart, I would probably get rid of a lot of stuff.  I know a lot of things have changed and been improved just since I had Camryn and I just don't know about storing a travel system or swing or other big stuff for that long.  There will probably be something nicer out if you are going to possibly wait 4 or 5 years.  So I'd probably try to sell some of the nicer, bigger stuff on CL now while people still want it.  It would shame to wait 4 years and then decide not to have another and then not as many people want the "older" stuff.
