Why won't both my kids nap??

Without naps, they turn into huge cranks come 5 pm or so.  Which means forget going out for dinner, or for anything else.  But for some reason, we stupidly keep trying to take them out after they haven't napped, and we keep regretting it.  In the past 2 days, we've had to leave 2 restaurants before we even ever placed our orders.  First due to Sam's tantrums, then yesterday was Hannah's turn.

Currently Hannah is napping, and we're still trying to get Sam to fall asleep, but he's fighting it tooth and nail.  Will we ever be able to go out for dinner again???

  • Ugh - I am so sorry you are dealing with this!  I don't remember how long it has been, but do you think they could still be adjusting to the new time zone at all?  Is there anything different about their rooms right now that might be missing something they had at home in Houston?  Room darkening or white noise, certain bedding, etc?  I'm sure you have thought of all of that, though.  I'm glad Hannah napped for you.  Hopefully they will get back to their normal routine soon.

  • Actually, I spoke too soon--Hannah didn't nap either!

We've been here for 2 weeks, so I'm pretty sure they're over the jet lag by now.  But we're not even in our permanent place yet--still in a temp. apartment.  So we don't have any of our stuff, really, except for clothes, computers, and a few books and toys.  I'm sure that's part of it.  But mostly they just don't want to lie down.  Sam insists he's not tired, while rubbing his drowsy eyes.  Hannah usually tries, and she had actually been napping really well for a while there.  But the last several days have been hit or miss.

I'm sure it has to do with a change of routine.  It will be easier once Sam starts school next month!

    Thanks, jeneric!

  • Luckily Julia still naps, but Elena refuses, and has been refusing for a couple months now.  However, if I get Elena in the car after 1 pm, she is out like a light -- she NEEDS the nap.  Drives me crazy b/c my happy girl has turned into quite the crank b/c she's not getting enough sleep.  UGH.

So, all that to say I commisserate.  I'd love to have a daily nap!
