Styrofoam at a Wedding?

Yeah... that was odd... Maybe its just me.

The reception (setup) was one of the most prettiest ones I have ever been to... but imagine my surprise when everything was served with plastic silverware and styrofoam!

Re: Styrofoam at a Wedding?

  • haha :)

I will never again care about those types of things as it relates to weddings. I had the pleasure of going to my BIL's quickie, planned-in-two-weeks wedding last month and it was SO wonderful. And I'm talking about pot luck, grocery store cakes, and *paper* plates here! They are SO in love it's ridiculous and it honestly made me think about the things I stressed about for our wedding :)

  • Weird...why spend all of that $$ making it look beautiful only to use styrofoam...strange...

  • That is really odd for you?  Every wedding i have ever been to , including mine in Oct, had paper plates, plastic forks, maybe not Styrofoam cups but plastic ones.

  • Maybe its location? I don't know, most weddings that I have been to have had real plates, silverware, and glasses

But, that said, I don't think there is a problem with its just weird if you spent tons of money on the reception to not spring for better plates

Well, yes, plastic cups (from the bar) was not shocking... but every wedding have been too, and mine included had regular plates and silverware... (like, the kind that need to be washed).

Around here unless you spend $15,000 plus its all fake.  lol  I am only spending $5000 on the whole wedding, so to me I could care less what people eat off of and drink out of.  I know Klassy, but to me its all about the love and party! lol

It is all about the love and party!  No one's going to remember what they ate off of--they'll just remember how much fun they had Smile

  • My mom wanted to buy disposable stuff for our wedding, not really going with outdoor, eco-friendly theme. It wasn't until I showed her how much renting stuff cost, and compared it to the cost for disposable stuff and the cost for garbage did she realize renting was a better option. I think some people don't realize renting can be cost effective or they are just lazy.
  • hopping on the eco-friendly bandwagon here but personally i think it's extremely wasteful to use disposable plates, cups, etc. at a wedding.  i know it's about the love and party but i think mounds of garbage anywhere is gross.
  • errrmmm... well, I guess it all depends on the style of the wedding. But I can say I've never been to a wedding that had anything other then china. And here in MI (I grew up in AZ) weddings tend to be even more formal then those in AZ! If it was a casual, picnic style wedding I'd expect it, but otherwise it's a bit .. different, not to mention wasteful.

Yes, this. I think plastic if highly odd for an otherwise nice wedding. I've only seen china.

BTW, I somehow didn't realize you are in MI, Bim.

  • My niece had a beautiful wedding with really nice china and silverware. I couldn't believe it when they served drinks at the table with plastic cups and at the brides table really cheap glasses.  They had waterford toasting glasses that I bought for them. The food was great and it was fun. I was just surprised.

On a side note MIL was upset because I had a dessert reception and didn't serve dinner.

    I completely agree with this.

I have only been to one wedding that used anything but styrofoam or paper plates or those nice clear plastic plates, but I grew up in a farming community in Kansas. Even my relatives from bigger parts of the state still had the nice-ish clear plastic that looks like glass.

It was DH's cousin (not from my state) who married a rich girl from CA, so completely out of my realm.

  • As an event coordinator my theory it depends on the venue. Some venues include china, stemware, and flatware in their catering package. Otherwise it depends on the caterer, if they provide it it's usually disposable but if not you either buy or rent what you prefer.

I personally have not done a wedding with paper dinner ware the closest I have had  was an ecofriendly green wedding where everything was from recycled materials and the plates were recycled glass and plastic.

  • I've never been to a wedding where paper / plastic / styroform was used. But I could see how it might be appropriate in the right setting (casual wedding, BBQ reception).
  • I agree about the waste more than the tackiness. And I'm not sure how it's cheaper to buy everything disposable than to just wash reusable items, kwim?

I think I've only been to one where there was like red Solo plastic cups, and I did think it was memorable (considering I can't remember what kind of glass or china any other wedding had). But, whatever.

  • As an events manager for a catering company I get to see everything. It all depends on the bride and groom.  I had two wedding yesterday, #1 was an over the top served dinner with 200 guests with 3 courses and wine service, amazing and beautiful.  #2 was a couple that was just super in love, didn't have much money and just wanted to have a good time.  They had our "plain and basic" buffet menu and used styro plates and plastic cutlery for 300 guests.  I will say that we rarely get the bride who does use plastic service, but it does happen on occasion.  I am starting to see an increase in brides who are considering it as an option due to the economy, people are serioulsy starting to cut back on added expenses to their wedding celebrations.
  • Paper plates, plastic silverware and plastic cups are the norm here in the south. Only the really expensive weddings have real dinnerware.?

  • Default service for my reception site was plastic utensils and Chinet. We upgraded for china and silver.

  • I agree that it depends on the theme of the wedding (fancy vs. low-key), but most that I have been to had real silverware and plates.  My sister and BIL had plastic/sytrofoam for theirs and it was a real pain to cut up food without destroying my plate.  Had it been a backyard shindig with a BBQ (a George Banks vision), I wouldn't have found it strange but it was a more formal affair.

Kind of like those clear plastic heels strippers wear?

  • We had paper plates and plastic silverware. Paper cups, too. We didn't have the extra money to pay to rent the real stuff. FTR, my mom is the most eco-friendly person EVER and she made sure the plates were recycled and she washed and kept the silverware. True store.
