"The incredible shrinking baby" =(

That is what our pedi called Holden this week when his now weekly weight checks showed that he lost weight between last week and this week.  I honestly dont know what to do!   we feed him constantly, and hes still not gaining properly!  When we started this journey 4 weeks ago he was 13 lbs (4 lbs up from birth weight) he has been 13lbs since his 2 month appt.  We started giving him two 4 oz bottles of formula and 2 servings of rice or oatmeal cereal with bananas a day on top of me putting him to the breast every 2 hours before I go to work then Dh feeds him 12 oz of bm while I am at work hes gone from 13 lbs, to 13 lbs 4 oz, to 13 lbs 8 oz, then back down to 13 lbs 5 oz this past week...  ugh.

  • Wow.  Where is he hiding all that food??  I'm so sorry, J.  I obviously have no advice for you, but I do have tons of sympathy.

On a completely separate note - I had a dream last night that you, K and little Holden were on TV.  Some news story about your dog (which was totally not actually your dog - you know how it is in dreamland).  I can't remember exactly what was going on, but your dog was effing psycho.  I think he might have even had two mouths?  I dunno.  So strange.

  • What are they having you do next?   Is there othe testing you can do?

    I hope he's ok!

  • you know, that rice cereal raelly doesn't have that much in the way of calories.  Are they having you start other solids?  I would think of doing avacados - they're really dense with calories and nutrients as well as good fats.

  • I don't think you're feeding him enough. We give Ryan 5-6oz of formula every 2.5-3hrs and he can prolly eat more. We also feed him oatmeal in the AMs and a veggie at night. Avocado has a ton of nutrional value and calories too, and I bet your lil guy will like it. Maybe you don't have enough milk? I had the same issue with Payton and ended up only BFing in the early Am before work and her last meal of the day, all while FFing all day. That seemed to work for us. Do you have a scale at home? You could weigh him before Bfing, then after to see how much he's getting. Good luck! Hang in there mama.
  • I have no advice to give.... just a giant (((HUG)))!

  • Didn't you say that you and your brother where the same way? Did your ped ok introducing more foods? I know Jill had a scale at home and weighed Ben to see how much he gained and lost. You can rent hospital grade scales. Have you tried to increase from 4 oz to 6 or so? I remember that there was a time where I just tried to see if Logan wanted more and he sucked the whole thing down. Even though it seemed like a waste of formula at times. Hang in there and I hope your ped has given you a next step.

we've tried giving him more in his bottles but anything over 4 oz and he spits up.  Im going to add avacados next.   He doesnt act hungry all the time or anything so i dont know...  the dr said were feeding him more than enough?

I guess I should also specify that I dont go to work until three, so he gets the 12 oz of bm, 4 oz of formula and serving of rice cereal or oatmeal with bananas all before he goes to bed at 9 so in 6 hours time.

  • :(  I don't have any advice, but just wanted to say that it sounds like you're working really hard to give him what he needs!  Hang in there!

  • :( he is UP from a month ago, right? That's a positive... what % is he at, what % was he at a month ago? If it's on the same curve, I think he'll be ok. We went through all of this when P was an infant and even though she was just barely gaining over a month, she was on the same curve... tiny. Maybe Holden is just tiny too? :( eating is the hardest part of NB motherhood, I swear. I'm so sorry you're going through this, I hope you find an answer soon. Hugs mama!

I just want to reiterate this!  It sound like you are doing everything you can to find ways of getting food into Holden.  Avocado sounds like a good idea.

  • Oh Lynchie I am sorry. I don't have any advice either because I haven't been there. Just another one with HUGS for you. I am sure everything will turn out fine.
  • How frustrating!  I'm sorry you are dealing with this.  Tillman was (and is) a slow grower, so I can feel for you a little bit.  Are they going to do any testing or anything?  How is his development?

  • I agree with other counsel about the rice cereal not having nutritional value - I only gave it to my son to help him sleep longer and get used to texture. The avacado is an excellent idea. You can also, when his system is a bit more mature, make your own cereal from any kind of whole grain and my son's fave - beans! If you put them in your blender or bullet for a good minute or 2, they create a fine powder that cooks up really wonderfully! I mixed it with breast milk and eventually with fruit puree. It's nice to know exactly what they are getting. :)

I am confident that you have everything you need to meet his needs. You can do it, mama!
