I'm about to go on BC for the first time in 4 years! I've only ever been on the pill and I hated it. I'm looking for something non-hormone this time around.
What do you use? What are the pros/cons in your opinion?
I will be going on paraguard (the copper IUD) when this LO is born. I know there are several ladies on here who hated it, but there are several others who love it.
I'm going to give it a shot. It's not like it's not removable. If it's a fail, we'll be back on condoms so I hope it works for me.
SFL- I hate the mini pill and was awful about remembering to take it. I want to get an IUD but am so scared it will fail but I DO NOT want 2 under 2 again!
I know its hormonal, but I'm on the shot right now and love love love it! I think it is keeping me from losing some weight, but I would gladly take it. You don't have to worry about placement (like iuds) its good for 3 months, you don't have to remember to take a pill every day or put a ring in every week. When I get baby fever, it makes it virtually impossible for me to give in!
I know Mirena is still hormonal but the hormones are concentrated in the cervix so there's much less of a chance of side effects. I've tried a wad of different BCPs and had side effects on every.single.one but had no side effects whatsoever with Mirena.

/rave review.
FWIW, you take the ring out every three weeks, wait a week, and then put another in. It's not every week.
My MW strongly, strongly suggests the diaphragm. It's old-school, but she uses it and raves about it. And she's been using it for 10+ years with no problems or "whoopsies."
I planned on using that w/ charting, but right now we're just half-azzed charting, because we are okay with getting pregnant again. But after our next DC, I most likely will get the diaphragm...unless, of course, I end up with baby fever, yet again.
I hate the pill too....it makes my breasts grow about a cup size each month...which is nice at first but after 3-4 months it is just ridiculous. We won't use an IUD because it just prevents embryos from implanting but it doesn't prevent sperm from fertilizing the eggs and creating embryos. I have a lot of issues with that.
We used a diaphragm before trying to have #1....it wasn't too bad. The biggest con is that the spermicide leaks out of you throughout the next day which can just lead to a kind of icky feeling.

Actually that's not true. At all.
And that wasn't just spermicide leaking out of you. You know that right?
I have paragard and am starting to love it. I've only had two problems with it. 1. Really heavy periods for the first about 6 or7 cycles, and 2. the strings have been receding up into my cervix and the first time it happened if freaked me the hell out because I didn't know what was going on. Both problems are pretty well resolved and I think it will be worry-free contraception here on out until I have it removed.

As Lanie said, not true. Are you getting your information from a pro-life website?
Aren't you supposed to take your diaphragm out after sex to, you know, clean it off and yourself off? That is not just spermicide leaking out, my dear. That would be just regular ole' sperm.
ETA: My bad. I see that you have to wait six hours before doing that. But you would still be able to clean it off after the waiting period. Gross.
I loved the paragard while it lasted. I did however get pregnant with it and had a huge nightmare because of the pregnancy but there's always that 1% to worry about with any bc. I think that once my cycles are back on track I'm going to try charting but I haven't discussed any of it with my OBGYN. I really wouldn't be against going on the Paragard again (really, what are the chances of it happening twice to the same person) since the only negatives I ever had was heavier periods (for like 2 days of the period) and sometimes my DH could feel the strings... neither are a big deal.

I know it's hormonal, but I LOVE the Mirena. I had problems with hormonal BC before (the pill and the patch) and I have had no problems or side effects with Mirena at all. Literally, none. I will definitely be using it again after we have our next baby.

I hated hormonal BC so I got Paragard. I love it. My first pp period was AWFUL and the next couple were a bit heavier the first two days. Now they are pretty light and I don't have any cramps. I don't have any other issues either.

First, I'm imagining the porn videos you could star in after six months. Well, not imagining the videos, so much as the titles, or your porn star name. Something subtle and classy, like Breasty McNipple.
And then I'm thinking "Why in the name of giant D-cups are all those porn stars spending money on silicone when they could just take the pill?" And then that leads to "Wouldn't porn stars probably be taking the pill anyway?"
And then that leads me to, "OMG, what if you got pregnant while you were on the pill, and then your breasts start to swell from that?"
And then I end up with, "Why aren't the streets of the world full of titanic breasted women who take and/or have taken the pill?"
Paraguard SUCKS - stay as far away as possible from it! I had it in for 4 months and it was horrible. My periods were 12 days long & so heavy that I would bleed through a double super tampon in 30 minutes flat. I would literally sit on the toilet for hours, I couldn't go out in public unless I had constant access to a bathroom, I ruined several sets of bed sheets b/c I bled through multiple times at night. It was seriously the most terrible 4 months of my life.

I have to agree. It has been horrible and I can't wait to get it out. My OB suggested I wait until the same day I get the Essure done to minimize the procedures I have to go through.
I also think that its not as effective as they say it is. I know a few people IRL who have gotten pg on it and mine shifted on me...part of the reason I'm getting it removed and no longer relying on it as BC.

O.M.G. Dear Lord, maybe I will just continue to have 2u2 until we are all done having babies and then DH will get snipped. I remember now why I went off the pill and never found another form of BC. They all suck. (Turned out I didn't need BC then as it took us 2 years to get pg)
Thanks for all the replies ladies! So many more replies to this post than I expected!

Just at a friends for dinner tonight and she too got pregnant with a paragaurd in!
I use a diaphragm and I like it. I haven't had any issues with it and I have DS because I didn't use it once. It can be a bit messy, as you are supposed to put the spemicide on the inside and outside and you leave it in for 6 hours after, but other than that, no complaints.
I know you said "no horomones" but I LOVE the Ring. It keeps my cycle on schedule, I don't feel any side effects. And my periods have definitely shortened to 2 days!
Before I got pregnant with DD, I was taking Yasmine (the pill). I loved the fact that it kept me on schedule with my cycle, BUT it made me BSC.

That's the one I'm learning towards. I hear a lot about it.

I hated being on the pill. We have been using condoms exclusively since DD was born.

Are you serious? Because if so, I'm confused. Does that mean you're against all forms of birth control or just spermicide in particular?
She's being extremely sarcastic.
I'm completely joking.
*whew* I thought so but wasn't completely sure. It was going to take a lot to wrap my head around that one lol
We're doing condoms until we TTC #2 next year. Then I'll get my tubes tied or DH will get snipped since we're stopping after 2.
Frankly, DH and I don't have sex enough right now to make researching any other birth control worth it.
