2nd Trimester

PSA: "Non" Decaf coffee.

Decaf actually has caffeine in it, ladies.

It is only caffeine reduced. There is no possible way to cut out ALL caffeine from coffee.

So if you're like me and you don't drink caffeine, you probably should also cut out the slightly-less-than-half-caff coffee.

I worked for a coffee shop and had to warn all pregnant women of this and I didn't think too much of it online until I saw a post where a woman said she felt like she was on crack after drinking caffeine "free" coffee.

Not trying to step on toes, just trying to be helpful!

EDIT: I can't believe how bad i'm getting flamed for this.

Okay, since i've had to say it freaking twice..

YES. I did HAVE to inform pregnant women of this or I would get fired.

YES. We did get sued by a pregnant woman who didn't know that there was caffeine in decaf coffee.

NO. I DO NOT CARE WHAT YOU PEOPLE DRINK.

I was just trying to be helpful.

Re: PSA: "Non" Decaf coffee.

  • eh, I'm already cutting so much out of my diet, that I'm not going to worry about a little caffeine here and there.

Thanks for the heads up, though.

  • I love my "decaf" just as much as I love my lunch meat, hot dogs, and blue cheese.

I'm sorry but I would be very offended if an employee actually warned me about the product I was about to consume. That can't be company protocol....

I'm really not trying to be rude... just sayin'.

decaf coffee only has a tiny bit of caffeine in it. But, I read that it is actually worse for pregnant women than regular coffee b/c of the chemicals they use when they decaffeinate it, so I avoid it for that reason.
  • Hum - My Barista said that their decaf espresso beans were 99% caffeine free and this is a small local place. So maybe it's not 50% everywhere. (Sips decaf iced skim latte - yum)
  • Pregnant women are allowed up to 200mg of caffeine per day.  An 8-ounce cup of decaf coffee has approximately 8mg of caffeine. Obviously there is nothing to worry about.

Actually, Yes. It was company protocol.

Because a pregnant woman sued when she found out that decaff coffee has caffeine in it.

If i didn't warn pregnant women of this, I would have lost my job.

I was just trying to be helpful by posting this. Not telling women not to eat or drink something they want to, but because if they choose to cut out caffeine then i think they should know that this kind of coffee has caffeine in it.

Ditto!  Seriously, a little caffeine here or there is not going to hurt you.  I think they say no more that 200mg a day.  But, umm...yeh, I'd probably rip your head off if you told me that as I was buying a cup.  No offense or anything, I never even touched any caffeine while TTC or during the first trimester but now I like to drink an occasional diet coke here or there and my doc says there's nothing wrong with that.

  • I think most of us already knew this.
  • decaf content: typically less than 5 mg

regular caf conent: over 100 mg

why did you "have" to warn pregnant women of this?  was it part of your job, like you would get sued if a pregnant lady drank coffee?

you aren't the pregnancy police.  i drink "regular" coffee at least three times a week, and soda every day.

    ?

That woman who felt like she was on crack last night was me and it was because the barista messed up and didn't give me decaf (I didn't say?caffeine?"free") like I had ordered. I also know that decaf does have a little bit of?caffeine?but not as much as regular. Thanks for the helpful info though...

  • And I will continue to enjoy my full-caff cup daily :)

It really depends on the decaf.  Most higher end places use swiss water processed decaf, which is fine and doesn't have chemicals in it.  i always ask to make sure, though.

Me too! I don't mind it in the morning but at night it keeps me up like crazy!?

Well you obviously didn't read my response to another woman.

YES. IT WAS A PART OF MY JOB DESCRIPTION.

Our company DID get sued by a pregnant woman because she didn't understand that there was still caffeine in the coffee.

I never claimed to be the pregnancy police. Ever. That's rediculous.

And I dont give a crap what you drink.

I was just trying to be helful to those who might not know and would be concerned.

Interesting, I will have to start inquiring. I do miss it! Thanks!

lol, no i didn't read any of the responses before i posted.  and you're right, pregnancy police are ridiculous.

You think this is a bad flaming? Geez... don't get your panties in a bunch. This is nothing compared to what some people get.

  • I have a question that I cannot find answers anywhere. Why is that the caffeine in coffee makes you way more jittery than a caffeinated soda? I can't drink coffee at all this pregnancy cause of it but I can drink sweet tea or pepsi. I'm baffled.

It's really not - this is just internet rumor. The chemicals used are perfectly harmless (one is naturally found in fruit) and any trace residue is burned off in the roasting process, since all coffee is decaffeinated before it's roasted.

As far as the OP goes... chocolate also has a little bit of caffeine in it, and you don't see many pregnant women fleeing in terror from Rocky Road ice cream. *shrug*

  • Hmmm...I can only imagine what you might say if you worked in a restaurant and I ordered a glass of (god forbid) wine.

  • I also work for a coffee shop and our decaf coffee has only 3-5% of the caffeine of regular, not exactly what I'd be concerned about. Also, everything I've read says that is a pretty normal range. which means a cup of decaf is about a tenth of the caffeine of a can of pop.

I work at a national chain, and we do use a water process for those who are concerned , though I know that some other national chains still use the chemicals.

  • I worked for a coffee company as well, and learned the same thing.  I think it was more than 50% of the caffeine they took out of it. I was pretty sure it was just a small amount of caffeine in the coffee.  DH's cousin worked for another one and learned the same thing.  But you are right-there is no such thing as 100% caffeine free coffee.  It does not exist.

ETA: I worked for Starbucks and I can tellyou that they do not make  practice of telling pregnant women or anyone else that there is some caffeine in decaf.  I know this not only from working there previously, but because I've been to four different stores in the last few weeks and I am obviously pregnant, and no one said a word other than to ask when I'm due.  The store the OP's store was probably a smaller, privately owned or small chain.

Don't you know I had a girl at a starbucks cafe in a barnes and noble tell me that she would not "allow" me to drink it and I only ordered a tall. lol. Needless to say my hormones got the best of me that day.

Because a soda has a fraction the amount of caffeine as a cup of coffee. I think its something like 100 mg compared to 20 mg.

I read it in a book, not on the internet. But still good to know, thanks!

  • I read in a magazine that a cup of coffee has 5x the amount of caffeine as a Pepsi or other caffeinated drinks. Not sure how true but it made me feel better about drinking my daily Pepsi. Big Smile
