Iron Deficiency= blurred vision?

Last night randomly my right eye started going schizo on me and the only way I can explain it is that it was pulsing and blurry? It only lasted about 5 minutes and then I was fine..

Not a great explanation I know, but a friend mentioned that my iron might be low- which it is, I am on 2 Slow FE a day plus my OB Natal One...

Anyone else have this?

Re: Iron Deficiency= blurred vision?

  • I was put on an iron supplement also.  I haven't had any blurred vision though.

  • I've had progressively blurry vision in my right eye since about 4 months along. It's only one eye though and at first it would come and go in little one minute fits, like if you rubbed your eye too hard, but now it's pretty constant. My OB hasn't mentioned iron deficiency, but now I'm going to ask as its been constant for about a month.
  • Sudden eye issues can be a blood pressure issue. Can you get it checked?
  • I've had the same thing and yes I have low iron. I too have been taking slow fe as per my dr's recommendations. It feels as if I'm outside starring at the sun and then I come in the house and everything is blurry. Last time it happened was 2 wks ago and it lasted for about 30 minutes. It was pretty scary. My blood pressure is normal so I know that's not the problem.
  • i have had this happen a few times since 6 months or so.

Dr had me come in to monitor my BP as a result, which was fine (but is definitely a worry with blurred vision.)  They said other causes could be anemia or hypoglycemia, both of which I have.

Definitely mention it to your Dr.

  • I too have low iron and am on suuplements but my doctor said my blurry vision is due to water retention. I have had every test under the sun and they all come back fine (except the iron). I am clearly retaining a ton of water and my vision goes in and out of blurry all of the time. He said water retention can cause pressure behind your lens causing random blurry vision. Obviosuly you want to rule out anything else like diabetes that could be major but at the end of the day it could be just retention like I have.
  • It is caused by stress.
  • I've had blurry vision issues - they can be ocular migranes - where you see a blurry "halo" that floats through your vision.  My doctor said it could be a blood pressure issue as a warning sign of pre-eclampsia, but mine was fine.  Another suspect is allergies and poor air quality as well as hormones.  I've been good about taking my claritin and haven't had the issue again.
