we use a mobile in each of their cribs...we wind it up for bedtime and again after the middle of the night feeding...I like to think it helps "signal" to them it's time for sleep (not really sure on that one)...and I think it distracts from our exit...
Both had mobiles on their cribs. They loved looking at them in the morning when they woke up. It gives you a few minutes before they want you to come and get them (aka screaming for you). When they are old enough to "play" in their cribs then it's time to take mobiles out because they will grab at them.
Mobiles are a great learning tool. It's at the perfect distance for newborns to focus and learn to follow objects.
We just took them out last week as they were grabbing for them. I never had a problem with them not going to sleep because they were looking at the mobile.
We bought one mobile and one rainforest soother because one is more noise and the other one has blue lights, ect. I am glad we did because one of my daughters does not like the mobile and the other could care less about lights and sounds.?
We have a rainforest soother in each crib - and I don't intend to buy a mobile. If it seems it's something they may want/need I'll go get something fairly simple, but for now I'm not planning on it.
It was the same with our girls. The mobiles helped prepare them for bed. When we had to take them out because they were close to being able to grab them, it didn't make a difference. BTW we had a mobile and then transitioned to a rainforest soother. Those are great. Very soothing.
We use a mobile over 1 crib, but it's just to entertain them. It would never put them to sleep. They love to lay in there and look at it. It keeps them entertained for 20+ min.
