Fresh or jar solids??

I'm trying to decide if I want to make DS solids or buy the foods in the cute little jars.  I have a feeling it would be cheaper to make his food.  Is it hard?

What did you do and what were your reasons for your choice?

Thanks!

Re: Fresh or jar solids??

  • Laziness made me buy the jars. I stuck with the earths best (organic) and Gerber organic.

It really is a personal choice but it was so much easier for me to just buy it....also heps when youre on the go.

  • We kind of did a combo. When she started solids, I made everything. It was cheaper and not hard at all. I would make big batches on the weekends and freeze it so I always had something to give her in the freezer.

Once she started eating combo purees and I felt like she needed more of a "meal" I started using a lot of the jarred food. Then she was getting half jarred stuff and half mushed up (not pureed) fresh fruit and steamed veggies. When we got to the point where she could eat chopped fruit and veggies, I only used jarred food for convenience sometimes.

Now she's pretty much on all table food, although I do have a few extra jars that I keep handy in case she doesn't get enough veggies in her regular meals one day.

  • I've done both.  I make most of hers, but on our week vacation to the beach we bought jars (which I now use to freeze what I make it, which is really nice).  It's a lot more convenient to buy bc you just take it out of your pantry, but with making and freezing it on your own, you have to remember to get stuff out of the freezer the night before (or I guess you could just defrost in the microwave, which we did when we forgot to get food out) and really just plan ahead.  It's not hard to get used to, but like I said, it's more effort then just buying jars...

Actually, Nora seems to like the jarred stuff better.  I'm not sure if it's because it's more watered down?  I donno, but it's really frustrating to me especially because I bought the beaba and was going to justify the purchase by making it all... oh well.  I still feed her what I make mostly, it just doesn't go down so easily...

  • We always made her fruits and veggies because we were able to control what she was eating and it was a ton cheaper, and it's not hard at all.  (They eat so little, at least Kira did, that it lasts a long time, so it wasn't a daily thing or even close.)  When we went out we tended to take yogurt or something that we did not make, but we never bought baby food per se.  Good luck! :)

  • I made most of her food but did buy some Earths Best jar food (carrots and fruit purees that I could not find the whole organic fruit to make myself). The reason I made her food is it was cheaper and I had the time to do it. And I really enjoyed making it. Good luck!
  • So far we've just done jarred. I did puree and freeze some peaches and mango, that I plan to give her soon. But that was more because I had them on hand, and they needed to be used. So far, she's only on purees. I did give her some mashed up banana once, but she kind of gagged on it, so I backed off with the actual "solids" for awhile.  :-)
