Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

First bedtime with no BFing. SUCKS!

Tonight is the first night I have officially quit breastfeeding (I have been doing it once a day at night for a few months). UGH... she won't go to sleep! Cries "mama" and is standing in her crib. Apparently my new nighttime routine of bath, PJS, brush teeth, story/rocking and bed isn't working for her. This sucks!

I substituted breast with a milk sippy at first and then with a sippy of water to make the transition easier.  We just sit on the couch, where we always nursed, cuddle and he drinks before bed.  We also walked with him in his room a little longer so he got some extra cuddle time.  I hope it gets easier soon.  I know how hard and guilt ridden it can be at first but she'll be fine.. promise.

  • I'm sorry! I've been there too. It will get better soon!
  • Thanks ladies. I seriously feel like crying... which I know is crazy, but BFing has been such a big part of my life and hers it's kind of hard that it's over... plus the fact that she is not too happy about it clearly doesn't help. She's not crying anymore... just sitting up in her crib holding her lovey (video monitor).?

If neither of you are ready to give up that last session, I honestly wouldn't.  My DS and I still had our morning cuddle and nurse session that I loved and miss now that it's gone (didn't have a choice due to meds)... He could miss it and be ok but still enjoyed it while it was there.

  • Yeah, I wouldn't give it up but we are trying for #2, and the breastfeeding (even just 1X/day) is messing with my period so most likely can't get pregnant until I stop. Plus if I do happen to get pregnant, my doctor said she would want me to wean right away due to early contractions with the last pregnancy. So alas, I know it's time, but man it's hard. I really have loved it.?

Gotcha!  Then I go with my first response and reassure you that it does get easier.  Only took us a couple days for our new night time ritual to become comfortable.  GL with dropping the feeding and TTC!!

  • Congratulations on making it so long, that's such an accomplishment.  I was planning on making it to a year but Tyler self weaned at 11.5 months.  I like to joke that he weaned me.  And like you, I was sad about that part of our relationship coming to an end.  I hope that you find a new routine that works for both of you very quickly.  GL!
