2nd Trimester

Getting a lot of guilt from people...

Ok now i know there are very mixed views on coloring your hair while pregnant, but i never expected people to be so vocal about their opinions!

I've waited 7 months to color my hair, and at 25 i am about 30% grey....i was starting to look like crazy old Aunt Betty !! I knew that I prob shouldnt color in 1st tri and made a deal with my hair that it would only get 1 color this pregnancy in 2nd tri and that was it. BUT now people are like I cant belive you colored your hair , dont u know how bad it is??? ummm...everything i've read said do it as little as possible ??

Guilt...guilt...guilt......** sigh **

Re: Getting a lot of guilt from people...

  • This was one of the first questions I asked my doc when I got pregnant (I know, vain, right?).  She said that it was totally fine to have my hair colored.  Don't you worry a bit!  Enjoy your beautiful hair!!

  • People just love to play the 'make wrong' game.  You waited until after the 1st tri, you obviously thought about it a lot and made a decision.  Thank them for their opinion and let them know that in general you'll ask for it if you want it next time.  SMILE while you say it.  Big Smile

  • I'm pretty sure as long as it is well ventilated where you are then there is no problem.

  • because there are so many different opinions, I have asked this question at EVERY one of my doctor's appointments (all like 15 of them) and so far my doctors all say that its fine and safe to do as normal
  • My doctor said it's fine to do it. People just like to force their views onto others. if you feel comfortable doing it then tell them your body your choice

  • F*** em.  Seriously,  alot of things are "bad" and they are really not that bad.  The reason it's bad is because you inhale the fumes.  Well, my hair dresser inhales those fumes all day long and she is about to have a beautiful baby girl, so whatever!
  • Don't feel guilty if it makes you feel any better I was at the salon today and got my hair colored. ?This is the 1st time during my pregnancy and I will probably have it done 1 more time before the baby. ?Nothing is going to happy from you coloring your hair. ?People are nuts sometimes. ?Think of all the junk some people eat while pregnant well that also affects your baby. ?So why are people paranoid about color more then the food that goes into there mouth!!!
  • so far mine has been died twice... once to get highlights (simply to do something different) and then again to cover the highlights (because I really couldn't stand them).  Hopefully I'm done with color for awhile.

Anyway, I've been told that it's perfectly fine.  The fumes from the dye are generally the main concern.  But, if you are in a well ventillated area then you should be fine.  I never really noticed the fumes at all... so maybe certain dyes are just better about that than others.

Ya I never really noticed the fumes...I mean the color was only on 20 mins....I was prepared to go stand outside if they were bugging me.

  • People just like to preach although they probably know nothing about this. Hair coloring is ok and plus there are many dyes out there that are gentle to use.

  • Those pregnancy Nazis. What business of it is theirs? I see pregnant women SMOKING. Why don't they go and say something to them?!

I bet half of them have never even been pregnant themselves, right?

  • Yeah, unfortunately I've found the "advise" doesn't stop after the baby comes.  I just say "Well, according to my OB/Pedi it's fine so I prefer to take her/his advise."

Actually, my OB is super-strict on a lot of things and it's on my safe-meds, things to avoid form that hair dye is a-ok.

  • Personally I'm foregoing highlights, but I honestly think there's a diff. between "bleach" smells and hair color. Don't really know, just an educated guess. When someone says something like that to you, ask them where they earned their medical degree.
  • I got my hair done at 14 weeks and my baby is doing just fine. Try to ignore people.

  • Next time just ask them if they are a doctor, then say you are going to stick with what the professionals say. Man people can be rude. Enjoy your hair!

  • I don't see why you are worried. From everything I've read, and from what my stylist told me, the color (unless you are bleaching) isn't against your skin anyway. The biggest concern is the fumes so just make sure you are in a well ventilated area.
  • Enjoy your dyed hair!! Honestly if I had to go for all 9 months ( I went without for first tri) with my ugly roots I would be completely miserable!! I know it sounds vain but honestly its bad enough my face is breaking out and I'm cranky and tired all the time. I got my hair highlited at the beginning of second tri and I felt like a whole new person!!

I wish people who aren't preggo would stop giving us advice all the time. If you got the ok from your doc and you feel comfortable with it then do it!

  • I've been told it is absolutely fine...and have every intention of getting some highlights before I go back for the school year!  If you're really worried you can always do the thing where they use the foil and don't touch your skin with the dye.  I am sick of hearing what people think I should or shouldn't do...I'm getting really good at the smile and nod, then think to myself, "Shut the frick up!"

  • I read about it and asked my doctor.  They both said it was fine.  She said to try not to breath in the fumes, but it's okay to do.

I do a semi-permanent color and gloss.  I've done it twice so far and am 20 weeks.

  • i was told that awhile back hair dye was bad, but now a days they dont use harsh chemicals like they use to....think of all the hair dressers who are pregnant and still do hair for 9 months...ive been given grief for it to but its always older people, all i read and asked friends what their doctor said and my doctor said its just fine
  • So far I have avoided alot of unwanted advice (although now I am starting to show and the shock of announcement is wearing down so I'm expecting it) but my favorite response to dumb advice/guilt trips is still along the lines of:

"Thanks so much, I will let my Dr. know that one..." (always w/ a great big smile that says they are clearly out of line..)

  • I just did my hair this week.  It was long overdue.  Yes I do feel guilty but now I also feel pretty and I haven't been feeling that great about myself these past few weeks.
  • I'm a hair stylist and it is totally fine to color your hair after the first trimester. There is no proven evidence that coloring your hair can hurt the baby in any way. You should be just fine :)?
  • Try not to let these insensitive people get you down.  As long as you got the OK from your doctor, go for it!  Your state of mind is just as important for the health of your baby as everything else, and if having your hair look the way you want it makes you feel good, go for it!

  • Did they ever think about what hair stylists do when they become pregnant? They can't simply quit their job for 9 months. People can be so crazy!
