OK! I am happy now. Me and dh really love the name Isla Paige but I said that people would call her IS...LA and I would not like that. Survey says people know how to pronounce it. Thanks ladies.
That's how I would pronounce it, too. I didn't know it was eye-la.
Well, think of the word island. You don't say IS....land you say Eye...land, right?
I think many tend to confuse it because "isla" does mean "island" in Spanish and because of the Madonna song
Exactly! It's pronounced "ees-la" in Spanish. That's why I would pronounce it that way.
Of course it makes more sense to pronounce it "eye-la" in English. Duh (I'm saying "duh" to myself, BTW). This is why I wouldn't want to use the girl name Lucia, because I would want it to be pronounced "loo-CHEE-ah" as it's said in Italy, not "LOO-sha."

I know it's eye-lah only from the name polls on this site. Before that, I thought it was Ees-lah. I don't think the average person would know how it was pronounced unless they've heard of the actress. That said, they'd only have to correct them once, and they wouldn't forget how to pronounce it again.
I *know* that the girl name is pronounced Eye-la but when I see the word I still think ees-la first like island in Spanish. This is a pretty name but there will ALWAYS be problems with people pronouncing it correctly, IMO. Some know it more now because of Isla Fisher but plenty of people don't know her and will just be clueless about it.
Re: How would you pronounce the girls name...
Ditto.
Eye-la
Love, love, love it. Sounds wonderful with Giada.
You take my ovaries, I take your yarns.
eye-la
LOVE it! it's our #1 girl name at the moment. No middle name yet though.?
