Trying to Get Pregnant

Proof my letter to my doctor! (VERY LONG)

HI! Please proof my letter to my Doctor. Here is the a summary of what has been happening:

I went off the pill in Feb. 09 after being on for 13 years (I am 25 and went on it for period issues when I was 12 - I was getting violently sick). My period did not come back so beginning of July I went to the doctor for the first time. She took blood and I was negative for PCOS (which my mom has) but I was positive for Hypothyoridism. My THS level was 5.25 (normal, according to the latest charts, is 2.0). She had me retake the blood test and it came back at 3.98 and she said that it was "normal". I think that it is still too high and I am trying to let her know that below...

(this is the message from the Doctor)

I agree that a TSH above 5 is too high, despite being in the normal range. That's why I wanted to repeat the test.
Your repeat TSH was 3.98 and your free T4, a measure of active thyroid hormone, was 0.98. Both these values are normal.

Hi Dr. XXXX,

I really want to come in for a third blood test to check the numbers to make sure the 5.2 was a fluke. Additionally, I have been talking with other women who have had this blood test and they said that their physicians recommended their THS level be around 2.0 when they conceive. Obviously this is third hand information but I want to make sure that I am within the ideal THS level for pregnancy.

I am also feeling very emotional about not getting my period and I am having trouble coping with the thought that I am not ovulating as normal (mostly brought on by a couple baby showers that I have attended recently and continued thought that I want to be a mother more than anything else). I do understand that some women take up to 1 year to get their period back but I haven't had any spotting and very light cramps for a couple hours a month ago. It has been over 6 months and I feel that I should start examining the options and risks involved with inducing my period. Ian and I are no longer using condoms as a back up barrier but instead the "pull out a pray" method.

I am still temping and no ovulation pattern has been founded. As for the weight, it is an ongoing process. I have lost 1 pound but when I am upset I eat and this whole thing is making me really upset. My mom and I are now having a "competition" to see who can lose 15 pounds first and I have been swimming every night for a week as exercise. I have an appointment on Aug 11 for my annual exam.

Thank you for letting me vent.

Best,

MrsKimandIan

Re: Proof my letter to my doctor! (VERY LONG)

  • While I know it can take a year for your period to regulate after the pill, it should not take a year for it to come back completely.

I am sorry that you are frustrated with your Dr. But you should not have to beg for a follow up. Has your Dr. offered progesterone to jumpstart a cycle, and go from there? Your letter is fine But I would be more inclined to find another Dr. if possible. You should not have to go throuhg this.

  • honestly....

I think you should skip the letter to the OB and make a consulation with an RE about your concerns

what your experincing is not normal and from my experience RE are proactive on figuring out the cause/helping you conceive then OB's

It was the best descision I made when trying to figure out what was "wrong" with me before I had DD...

I knew something was off and thought I had PCOS, OB said nope you just need to loose some weight and did no tests. So I made a consultations with RE and I was right I had PCOS pretty bad, went on metforming and conceived DD 2 cycles later.

  • Um, people don't generally vent to their doctors. Honestly, if I were your BFF I'd have trouble with some of that. Your doc isn't going to get past the part in the first paragraph where you question her ability by comparing her to your friends' doctors.

  • My OB would not let me go past 60 days. Also, how did they test for PCOS? I ask because as you probably know, PCOS can possibly not show up in blood, but be seen on an ultrasound. I have fine hormone levels, but VERY PCOSish ovaries, and infrequent ovulation unless medicated. My OB wrote me off as neurotic when I wanted to see an RE. The second they scanned my ovaries, the diagnosis was clear, even to me and DH.

Not that I am a medical professional, JMHO.

  • I'm not sure your doctor is the right person to vent to, so you may want to cut those parts to draw her attention to the medical issues - primarily the thyroid and lack of period.  You may even want to use bullet points to highlight the main points you want to discuss at your next appointment.

"It has been over 6 months and I feel that I should start examining the options and risks involved with inducing my period." - this is a great sentence!

I don't know anything about thyroids but if you feel that she is unresponsive in this area, you may want to get a second opinion.

  • I agree with the pp. If it will make you feel better to write a letter to you doctor then stick to just the facts. I would leave out the personal information, especially about your sexual habits with your husband and the weight contest with your mom. These might be misinterpreted by your doctor and won't garner the desired result. If your doctor is unwilling to accommodate your very valid request, then I would consult a RE. Again, stick with just the facts and you should get a great result.

Good luck to you. I know how frustrating this can be.

  • This is a letter to my GP - she hasn't referred me to a OBGYN!

  • Personally, I would probably get a second opinion instead of sending a letter to your current doctor. If you have already expressed your concerns and are unhappy with what your doctor is doing, there is nothing wrong with seeing a second doctor to see if they agree or would recommend taking a different path. GL!

ETA- I just saw that this is your GP. I would definitely recommend seeing an OBGYN.

  • I would take out the personal info. I've worked for Dr.'s & can honestly tell you, that while some of them are good people, they really don't care that you got emotional at a shower or if you are swimming every night. If you have concerns & want more tests you need to be straight forward & brief. That is the best way to obtain & keep their attention, without making yourself look like a fruit loop. Vent to us or your friends, but not your Dr.

Also as pp's have stated, you may need more than a blood test or possibly a different Dr. While you may have irregular cycles for up to a year, you should still have a cycle.

  • Do you need a referral to an OBGYN? Make an apt. yourself. I would think that that is not a specialty that would require a referral.

You shouldn't need a referral to an OBGYN - if you do, ask for one NOW and skip the letter!

  • Thanks Everyone! I am going to redo my letter and take out the personal stuff - I am glad I was able to get it out in here though. Thanks so much for the great advice!!
