cd mammas wwyd

So, as you may know, I'm going through major rash issues with Nora.  We have to use a cream on her and a fleece liner and that isn't even stopping the rash at times.  I've been in contact with Stephanie at Abby's Lane and she's pretty sure Nora has a heat/ammonia rash.  So basically, Nora's skin may not tolerate cd's during the summer months or whenever it's hot.  So, would you move to a colder climate so you can keep your DC in cd's?  just kidding...

anyway, Stephanie has suggested we put Nora in sposies during nap time and at night and then change her every time she pees (which was 4 times in one hour on the floor last night), which seems virtually impossible unless I'm constantly checking her diaper... and to use cornstarch in her diapers to help soak up wetness and let her have as much naked time as possible.  I'm debating just trying sposies for a while to see if we can get the rash cleared up and if it does clear, possibly sell my whole stash (which I REALLY don't want to do!) or try Stephanie's suggestion for a while (which is hard to do because my Mom takes care of Nora 3x a week and doesn't really like to change her diaper all that much and really just wants me to give up on cds...)

Or I'm open to hearing other suggestions/ideas.  I am feeling SOOO defeated.  Stephanie said in the 5 years she's been involved in cd's, she's seen maybe 2/3 cases of this.  MIL and my Mom have been pretty much against me cding since the beginning and now I just feel like they're winning the battle...I know that's ridiculous, but I can't help how I feel.

  • I think you need to do what you need to do to get the rash cleared up. If that means going to sposies for awhile, so be it.

?The weather will cool off eventually and you can go back to the CDs. Don't feel defeated--just look at it as doing what's best for your daughter.?

We use sposies in between cloth all the time for convenience and if her little buttsky is getting a little rash. It clears right up and we then go back to cloth for awhile. We get them off diapers.com and they are completely biodegradable.

I'm sorry you're going through this, but hang in there! ?

  • Before you make any long term decisions, I'd put her in sposies for a few days and see what happens, see if she has any rash issues then.  I was thinking about your post the other day and thinking it does kinda sound like it is something in the CDs that's irritating her.  Are you sure it's not from the detergent you're using or some other sort of buildup in the diapers that could be washed out though?

  • Oh, and like lmc said, if CDs are causing the constant rash, and she's rash free in sposies, I wouldn't feel guilty about switching.

  • I'm glad Stephanie was able to help, but I'm SO SORRY it wasn't better news!  If you weren't using fitteds and coverless/fleece/wool a solution would be a lot easier, but you've been doing that all along!  It seems odd that sposies would be better for breathability than cloth without PUL, but I'd trust Stephanie. :(  After all, it was when it started getting hot last spring that we switched to mostly wool during the day as well, since I hated to have her sweat under PUL -- Kira is *very* hot natured and I was looking ahead.  We've already talked about that, and you've tried switching detergents already, so unfortunately I don't have anything left to suggest there....

I hear what you're saying about your mom and MIL -- if it were me I wouldn't want them to feel like they're "winning" either, especially as you've been doing *everything* so perfectly all along.  I sympathize!

It seems like it makes sense to try sposies during nap time and overnight.  And when Nora is with YOU and not with your mom (at least, if it were me!), you can let her breathe completely.  At least when she's awake you can change her immediately, but there's no way you could do that overnight and during naps.  With the weekend, you can start today and try through Monday and see how it goes.

Don't feel defeated -- you're doing everything you can!  I'm SO sorry!!! :(

  • I think our DC have the same skin! I feel like we'll get the rash all cleared up for a while, then it's back with a vengence!

I've been rotating in & out. We use cloth until he gets a rash, then switch to sposies until it's cleared up. It may be that you can just use sposies until the weather cools back down, then go back to your CD. I wouldn't sell them just yet (although I definitely had that same thought about 3 weeks ago).

Another suggestion...I had been using Charlie's soap since I started CDing. It worked great at first, but then we were having so many rash issues, mainly due to amonia build up/burn that I switched to using Original Tide (with all it's chemical & fragrance glory). J's bum has been perfect since the switch. Then last night I put him in a diaper that hadn't made it through the Tide wash yet, this morning he woke up with the worst ammonia burn he's ever had. So, you may want to try Original Tide - maybe it will be as good for you guys as it is for us! :)

Good luck with whatever you decide - I hope it works out ASAP!!

  • Do you have a front loader Back?  Is there a regular tide that is HE compatible?

  • It looks like there is:

And plenty of people swear by original Tide! :)

  • We were using Charlies Soap and then Planet and switched to Tide (the exact type pictured above, we have an HE front loader). It has really helped the smell. Also, we were at the beach last week and all my mom had was All Free and Clear and Ashley got the worst diaper rash, I know it was from the detergent because it cleared up after we got home and I washed all her diapers in Tide. I really hope you figure out what the problem is and I understand not wanting to let your mom and MIL "win", I feel that way anytime my nanny makes a comment about Ash having diaper rash, I know she blames the CDs. Good luck!
  • Oh, I just pray that Tide is the answer to our problems!!  I'm getting some tonight!  Wish me luck and thanks so much for all the help and ideas over the last few months.  Maybe we can figure this out!

  • FWIW - I do have an HE washer & I use the powder version that Alchris PIP'd above (I think I've read the liquid doesn't work as well, but I could totally be wrong about that). I use VERY little & it seems to be working well.

I hope it fixes your problems. Good luck!!

  • GOOD LUCK!!! Big Smile
