Any mommies having a midwife/ homebirth?

I just met with a midwife and plan on doing a homebirth. Just wondering if there is anyone else here planning one as well.

  • Not for my first birth.

  • i'm doing a midwife, but not a homebirth
  • Congrats!  I wish I could do a homebirth, but I have to rely on my insurance to pay for everything.  Luckily my hospital has a reputation for supporting natural birth and even has several staffed midwives.  When I went to my first appointment they actually set me up with a team including a physician, midwife (CNP), and an OB/Gyn.  While it is not a homebirth, I am pretty happy with what I am being provided.

  • I have always thought I would because that's what my mum did for 3 of us 4 kids. But the thought of it terrifies DH (who's mom had 4 c/s) so we're going to do the hospital but go natural. My dr told me that at my hospital, most of the labor/delivery nurses are also midwives...

Poison, I see you're also in So Cal. Are you delivering at Cedars Sinai?

  • If my mother had done homebirths for my brother and I, she would have been dead each time. I know this because that was my mothers original idea, and my grandma talked her out of it. She told her dr. this after-the-fact, and he told my mom to thank her mother for her advice. Therefore, I am 100% hospital out of total fear of complications, but I am not opposed to a midwife, just havent gotten that far in the birth plan process.

I am considering it.  I just started this week doing research on all my options.  I started reading Birthing from Within and ordered Thinking Woman's Guide to Better Birth.  I feel strongly about having a natural birth (for me personally), so my three options are:  hospital w/ doula, birthing center w/ midwife, or home w/ midwife.

It's funny, I brought this up with my mom several months ago when we were ttc, and she was totally supportive of a home birth.  She is still bitter about how the hospital totally f-ed up my birth and then she ended up with 3 cesareans (they didn't do VBAC then).  My dad said he knew a plumber that delivered four (or maybe six?) of his own babies in his home.  It's nice to know they are supportive no matter what I decide.

  • ideally i would love a midwife and to do a home birth but because of the complications that can happen there are no garauntees that you can get yourself or baby to the hospital in time if a major life threatening problem where to occur. i'm just not willing to take the risk. but i would love to do it at home. if i had a crystal ball telling me all would be all right then i would totally go for it but it's just too scary!

  • Our plan is to do a home birth with a midwife as long as everything is typical with my pregnancy. Our parents are all very supportive. Some of our friends probably think we're nuts...oh well! :)
  • Yes ma'am!  Very excited too :)

What are your plans so far?  Water?  Hypno?  Bradley?  I'm reading everything under the sun lol trying to find the right method for us.  So far it seems all can be learned and used as we feel comfortable.

You've probably already read some of these, if not all, but some of my fave books are Ina May's Guide to Childbirth, Spiritual Midwifery, Birthing From Within (as mentioned earlier...awesome book huh?!!), Active Birth, Birth-The Surprising History of How We Are Born,  Magic Beginnings-Enchanted Lives.....

And of course, you MUST see The Business of Being Born!

Good luck and keep us posted on your research and ideas!!
