themometer in the hiney

Has anyone had to do this?  Leo hasn't had a poopy diaper since Monday morning.  I called the pedi this morning and they suggested putting the themometer in his hiney....I don't know if I can do it.  He is really uncomfy so I guess I will try it, any advice?  Did it work for your LO, how soon?

TIA

Re: themometer in the hiney

  • Poor guy. Be sure to grease it up with a little vaseline.  It should work pretty immediately. It's easier than you think but that's easy for me to say--Mike's the one who has done it before, not me. Stick out tongue

  • I think DH might have once.  We just used belly massage and prunes when he was older.  I don't know what we would have done at 1 month though.  I want to say my nephew had to have some karo syrup in a bottle when he was 2ish months to help him.

  • Ditto what Kristen said. I couldn't do it, Ken had to do it. And it does work.
  • Just curious, didn't any of you ever have to take a rectal temp when your DC was sick?  Our pedi's office required rectal temps up till 6 months, and it was still the preferred method of temp taking up till a year.  I know this post is about helping the baby poop, but I got quite used to having to use a rectal thermometer.  I'm just surprised so many don't have any/much experience with it.

Ditto this.  Is there some different protocol to help the baby poop as opposed to just taking his temperature?

  • Kate was constipated quite frequently when she was little.  We tried the rectal thermometer (and that's how we take her temp when she is sick) and it didn't work.  We tried bicycling the legs, stomach massage, the karo, the prune juice, the apple juice, etc.  None of it worked.  The only thing that worked was a suppository (per the pedi).  Hopefully the thermometer will work for you because the suppository sucks (however works great!).  I would advise having at least one diaper (probably more) down when you do the thermometer.  It can get a little messy.
  • We also had to do this in the first month.  As metioned just lube the end of the thermometer up really well. You don't need to stick it in too far, that can hurt them.  I bet I only had it in there about 10 seconds before she started going. Beware though, if it actually does work, the poop can fly out. My SIL got poo covered doing this.

Good luck, and I promise it's easier than you think. I was super nervous my first time too.

  • We've been exceptionally lucky, Katie, Maggie's really never been sick or had a temperature, aside from one ear infection. We've taken her temp rectally less than a handful of times, and Mike's always been around to do it.

  • Wow, you ARE lucky.  Justin's had more temps than I care to remember!  You are also lucky in that your DH will do it for you!  Tom doesn't volunteer for that type of thing.   :)

  • Yup, he's a good egg in that regard-always taking on the things that make me squeamish. Holding her for shots, bloodwork, and all things rectal.

  • I've used the thermometer both to take temps and induce poop. It's no big deal. Although I definitely got pooped on trying to take her temperature. The thermometer always got her going when I actually needed a temp, and usually didn't make her go when that was what I was using it for. Stick out tongue

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I've had to take my share of rectal temps too, even on Piper fairly recently since I just don't trust our ear thermometer. I was so nervous and freaked out the first time, but it's really no big deal. I've never had to use it for inducing poop, though.

  • Katie - Ayden was only sick twice this year. DH has always done the temp part while I held him b/c he was so squirmy. The inducing poop was the only time I was nervous about it b/c it was the first time we had to use the rectal thermometer. I have no problems with it now other than it being hard b/c he wont sit still.

  • I never wanted to use a thermometer because I thought how gross that would be if he started pooping and I later had to use the thermometer to take his temp (even if it was rectally). However, I would use a Q-tip with Vaseline on it, and it worked the same way. I had to do this quite frequently when he was very young, as he was constipated a lot. We finally resorted to molasses in formula (per his pedi) to make him regular.

    Good luck!

  • DD kept getting low grade temps after her shots so I actually stepped up and tried the rectal thermometer by myself even though I was so nervous to do it. It actually managed to induce pooping even though that wasn't what I was trying for... like all the pp said, just make sure to use the vaseline and don't put it in too far.

     Good luck!
