J seems to HATE milk

So I tried giving J whole milk today for the first time. Big FAILURE. Everytime he takes a sip he just spits it back out & makes a "yucky" face.

Any suggestions on what I can do to get him to like milk?

FWIW - I really hate milk, so I completely understand his aversion.

  • I dont have any personal advice on trying it yet with DS but I bet it takes a lil longer to like esp. since its not as sweet as breastmilk. Jack had a hard time geting adjusted to the tastes of baby food but after we kept trying it over and over he came to and loves it now. Good Luck and maybe with time it will work!!

  • bummer! henry LOVES it. he won't drink formula on a regular basis (which is fine, since he's still BFed), but he'll drink whole milk right down. have you tried with a meal that makes him thirsty? PB&J maybe? PB crackers?

  • oh, and just keep trying (though i know you will!), he might like it eventually. maybe you could even add some of that yogurt drink for kids by yoplait? it's fruity, made with real sugar (not the fake stuff), and might taste more like the yogurt that he's used to eating. then you could just either taper gradually or cut it off cold turkey.

i'd be more inclined to just keep trying plain though... you don't want to always have to flavor his milk. and dairy/cheese counts too, so i wouldn't stress about it.

  • I don't have any experience with this yet, but I have heard it helps to phase in cow's milk rather than switch over completely at first. B/c it tastes so much different than BM apparently. The book I read said it was best to add 1 oz of cow's milk to BM to start and then slowly keep phasing out the BM/formula until the switch is complete.
  • Can you try giving him a cup that is 1/4 milk and 3/4 bm (or formula whichever he is used too) and then after a couple of days of that go to 1/2 and 1/2 and then go to 3/4 milk and 1/4 bm and then try a whole cup of milk?  I know we had to do that when switching the formula for the girls.

  • When we swithed C over our pedi told us that we could mix in a little Carnation Instant Breakfast powder (the vanilla kind).  It helped the taste and it also gave him some extra vitamins and such.  Once he started daycare we took him off the CIB since they wouldn't give it to him there and he has done fine ever since.  We've recently had to switch him to soy milk and he also took to that with no problems.  Good Luck!!

  • We mix half chocolate milk with half white milk.  BabyHill hates it straight white milk but will suck the bottom out of the cup with chocolate in it.  Some other will be strawberry flavors.
