Pacifiers

What's your DC's status?  We are trying to only let Jared have it @ naps & bedtime, but I also slip in the car sometimes.  I'm planning to completely wean him the first week of August when DH will be out of town.  I've heard from several people to just go cold turkey.  It will be hell for 3 days & then he'll be fine.  Ugh!

Re: Pacifiers

  • We got lucky. She was never super into them and flat out refused them at about 9 months.

    Bottles are another story.

  • Ds still has one. ?Im not in a huge hurry to get rid of it quite yet. ?I will when he turns 2.

  • DS only used it until 6 months. I stopped offering it to him when I moved him to his bed. I went cold turkey then and it wasn't bad. He was also only 6 months and not very attached to it. I have thought a few times that he still needed it though and felt bad I took it away.

THIS.  Definitely go cold turkey.  We did this with my son right before he was 2.  We tried to wean him and it was bad since we still had pacifiers in the house.  Get rid of them completely so you can't give in when you are ready to take it away.

Sophie's taking her fingers and I wish she would take her paci, but she won't.  Finger sucking is so much harder to stop IMO.

  • DS was never a huge fan of pacifiers. After about 4 months he would just pull it out and bite the sides of it. He is now a hard core thumbsucker. Which is going to be hell to break. Oy!

  • Only at bedtime now.  All of them are hidden so she doesn't see it, and I don't offer it to her unless she's super fussy and won't relax.  Her daycare actually helped - now that she's transitioning to the toddler room she doesn't get it at naptime so she doesn't want it at home.  It's made it a bit easier.

  • Zane had his until he was just over three and only at nap and bedtime. He was very attached to it and I had tried several times before to get rid of them but decided to keep my sanity a little longer. Of course, by that age you can reason with him and so we told him he had a few days left and then he wouldn't need to use them anymore and it worked.

With Emma, I took hers away around 16 months and she only used hers at naps and bedtime too. I was tired of them falling out of the crib and her screaming for them numerous times during the night. We took them away one night and she never seemed to miss them. I wish I had done that sooner.

    Good luck!

  • When we switched from the 0 - 3 month pacis to the 3 - 6 month pacis, the boys weren't interested at all.  Brady sucks his fingers, which should be hard to break at some point, but he was doing it when he was less than 1 hour old so...  Keegan - no paci or finger sucking!!
  • Noah had his until about 2.  He just had it at bedtime and then I took it away one night and he didn't even notice.
  • My DD is 14 months and still uses hers at naptime and bedtime.  It's going to be very hard to break her of them.  I'm having another baby and I worry that if I don't break her of it now she will start taking it from the baby.

I'm going to try cutting the nipple off them and see if she loses interest - I've heard success stories from that method but who knows if I'm going to be that lucky.

  • Fortunately, DS is weaning himself.  He's almost completely lost interest in it.  I don't think he'd notice if we got rid of it.....(now that I think about it, I think we will....just have to convince DH - who thinks the "binx" is the answer to everything.)

Unfortunately, DS has been sucking on his thumb instead.....damn! Can't take that away.

I tried that too with my son and it just pissed him off! He noticed it right away. I think at that point we were down to only three pacifiers left in the house so luckily I had back up.

Same here.  Kitten really only uses it at naptime and bedtime anyway.

  • Thanks for the input, girls!

  • DS mainly uses his for sleeping but sometimes has it in the car or will pop it in when he finds one laying around. I'm not really that concerned about yet. It's not like he's going to go to highschool with a paci!
