I saw that too- I tried to get her attention in my post below. It would be way weird if it was the same doc... but jenerally, you're right- that is a HUGE violation of HIPAA.

at the very least it's grossly inappropriate and unprofessional to gossip about other patients.

oh i definitely agree. the tech needs to be reprimanded for disclosing another pts status, even if it was anonymous

I think you guys are overreacting. It's not like the tech spat out names, phone numbers, addresses, etc. It was just small talk.

I disagree. It's a HIPAA violation if for no other reason than the fact that SLB's situation being so unusal DOES or COULD identify her. It's not like they were talking about someone who was pregnant with twins - could be one of hundreds of twin pregnancies. They were talking about someone who had a 4 month old and is pregnant with trips. This is an unusual situation, therefore identifiable, make sense? For goodness sakes, WE, a random internet board, potentially identified her by this tech's comment.

Health care professionals should not gossip about other patients. Ever.
