Vision issues anyone? (Kind of long)

Today we had a "grazing" day at work.  So I had a doughnut.  About two hours later, I got up to go talk to coworkers.  When I sat back down to my desk I noticed that some of my vision was gone.  When I tried reading my e-mail I couldn't see the first two letters of any of the words and stuff like that.  Parts of people's faces were "gone" because of these spots.  So it really freaked me out.  I called my OB and the nurse called back and told me my regular doctor was off but to come in immediately to see the on call doctor.  Long story short, they checked my urine and tested me for neurological, stroke, and blood pressure problems.  Everything came back normal expect my urine results said I was dehydrated and there was no traces of glucose whatsoever.  The doc told me that she though my blood sugar bottomed out and that caused neurological issues.  Does this sound right?  I googled this and couldn't find out alot of information pointing this way.

On top of it, she let me leave with my sugar bottomed out and I wound up throwing up and almost passing out while driving home.  My mom and husband are completely upset with this doctor.  But I just want to start feeling better.  My vision has returned but I'm fatigued, still a little nauseous, and have a decent headache going on.  Sorry for the long post, but it's just been a horrible day.

  • Did they check your BP?  Vision problems can be the sign of a BP problem.

  • Yes, my bp was 108/72 so that wasn't the issue.  I just don't want it to happen again!
  • Sounds like my symptoms prior to a migraine.  My migraines are really triggered by my vision (bright lights, sitting in front of a computer, etc).  I start getting blurred vision, "halos", and spots in my vision.  It's usually combined with fatigue and nausea.  They can be brought on by low blood sugar, not enough sleep, dehydration, etc.  Sounds to me like what you had, but if you're worried I would get a 2nd opinion or go to the ER.
  • That (blind spots, nausea, etc) happens to me prior to a migraine, too--it's called an "aura."

My migraines tend to be triggered by a combination of factors, including estrogen, dehydration, not eating well (= blood sugar issues) and allergies.

With all the hormones running around in here right now, I've been hoping I won't get migraines while preggers!  I couldn't take even low-estrogen birth control, it made my auras awful, including not being able to speak properly (like I'd had a stroke--very freaky) and the migraines were also more frequent. In many women they do seem to be estrogen related--more common at certain times of the month, etc.

Anyway, if it was a migraine (and not all of my migraines have included lots of pain), you will probably feel drained and a little "hung over" for a day or so. Get lots of sleep and drink lots of water, eat lightly (nothing too heavy or sugary) and take care of the two of you. Hope you feel better soon and that it doesn't happen again!

  • definitely sounds like a migraine to me. i get them all the time.  black spots in your vision, dizzy, nauseous. best advice if it happens again (hope it doesn't) get to a dark room fast, drink lots of water, take Tylenol (excedrine migraine if you were not pregnant) and get a lot of rest. as mentioned above you will feel hung over and week for about 24 hours and probably have a small head ache too.  good look and feel better

  • PS--Sorry, thought of more possibly helpful stuff.

Talk with the doc, of course, but Tylenol and a little bit of caffeine may help with the headache. During migraines the blood vessels in your brain dilate, putting pressure on the brain and causing pain. Caffeine and an anti-inflammatory (eg Tylenol) help shrink them back down.

If (hopefully not, but if) you start getting one again, take some Tylenol and drink a bit of coffee as soon as you notice the symptoms, then go hide in a dark quiet place if you can. Whimpering is an acceptable response, as well. ;)

  • I have experienced this and also saw my OB today. She said she thinks I'm dehydrated, but would like me to have a sugar test early. I hope it isn't GD.

I've had migraines before, but for me this isn't quite the same. Unless of course pregnancy has caused me to experience a change in my migraine symptoms.

FYI - TYlenol is a pain killer, not a anti-inflammatory. But you're right on everything else!!!

  • Something similar to that happened to me a couple of weeks ago.  I had just eaten something (fruit I think) and went back to work on my computer as normal. All of the sudden, I noticed I had weird vision.  I had blind spots.  I have had 7 eye surgeries over the years and two last year to help prevent a condition (acute angle glaucoma) that can lead to increased pressure and cause blindness if the pressure gets to high.  Anyway, I didn't have any pain, but I couldn't see right.  I tried covering one eye then the other to see if it was isolated to one eye or not (I do not have binocular vision- I see different  images in each eye, but my brain has been ignoring one since infancy so it's not weird to me).  It was bad with both eyes.  My mother is diabetic and first noticed it by vision changes, so I was worried about GD.  When I got really panicked and thought I would have to go see my eye doc, it sorted itself out and went away.  the next day, I ate the same thing, then used a glucometer to check my sugar.  It was normal.  I think it may have been dehydration. or an ocular migraine  I've had no other instances since.  I go see my ob next week, maybe I'll mention this to him just to be safe.

I can understand you being scared.  Scared the crap out of me, but lasted only about 10 mins.

  • This has happended to me twice this pregnancy.  It has been prior to two migraines.  The first one I didn't eat and it got so much worse.  My vision went out completely in my right eye for about 30 minutes at one point.  The second time was just this past Tuesday at work.  I work for a surgeon and when my vision started getting blurry, stars, etc, I went to ask him and he told me to eat a Banana ASAP.  I luckily had one and it helped almost within twenty minutes.  I kept eating other fruits and yogurt and other items I had brought and I felt like a new person (a full person) after a few hours.  My BP has always been a little on the low side, so I am used to seeing stars when I stand up or sit down quickly.  Pregnancy does these lovely things to us sometimes.  I say, start eating.  For me the food cures all.  Good luck!
