should I call L&D about this

My doctor's office is already closed so I thought I may ask you ladies. ?I have been having BH contractions for a couple of days now and I have started to notice a weird problem. When I am laying down and having a BH, I find that I have a hard time breathing and that my heart is racing. ?As soon as the contraction is over, I have immediate relief but it will re-occur as soon as another contraction starts. ?The BH don't "hurt" (just annoying) but the breathing and heart racing is bothersome.Has anyone else experienced this??

Re: should I call L&D about this

  • I would call the after hours number at your ob's office and ask the on call doctors opinion. It's better to be safe than sorry.

  • Are you laying down on your back?  You shouldn't be.  Your Dr's office should always have someone on call.  Never be afraid to call them.
  • I'd call your doc if you can, otherwise L & D, just to be safe.
  • it's always better to be safe than sorry but IMO i always have a hard time breathing and my heart races when I lay down, contrax or not. Do you have this problem when standing up as well or maybe see what happens when you take a bath.
  • Yeah, my doctor's office is--how do I put this nicely--retarded! ?There is no on-call doctor. ?It's a "leave a message and we will call you back tomorrow" answering machine. ?Really stupid in my opinion since they are probably the most well know OBGYN office in my town.

As for how I am laying down, I can't lay on my back (oh how wonderful that would be though). ?No, unfortunately, it's when I am laying on my left side.?

you might want to edit your use of the R word - people (including me) are pretty sensitive about it.

On your question:  if it worries you, call.  Better safe than sorry.

Considering some of the language and topics I've heard discussed on here, the "R" word seems pretty tame to me. ??

Off topic, but you might ask OB at next visit how you can get in touch with him/her when you need them.

Also, I don't know fully the answer to your question. It might just be a contraction thing. I get it sometimes too. I would just suggest changing positions when you are having a contraction while lying down. A pain, I know, but will relieve the discomfort some.  But call L&D if you are concerned.

  • I would call the on-call nurse/doc for my practice and ask.

Then you obviously don't spend much time on here.

If what you are experiencing is not normal for you then go to L&D! We are not doctors!

  • Well, yeah- if you call the number you call during the day, you're going to get an answering machine. You need to check the card or website or any pamphlet that you have for your doctor's office- they probably have an answering service you can call... which is likely a different number than their office hours number.
  • Most docs offices have the after hours line number ON the recording you get if you call the regular number.

And yeah, change the R word... it will not be received well.
