Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Not crawling? Try Hip Helpers

Hi all,

We have an 8 month foster baby. Due to drug exposure during gestation, she was court ordered to undergo an early intervention evaluation. Thankfully, she is meeting all her milestones and there is no cause for concern.

Amongst other tips, I picked up a great one for those with non-crawling babies! Apparently our D(F)D sits in a "W" - meaning her legs are opened wide. Also when she tries to crawl her legs are opened wide too. The physical therapist recommended hip helpers - www.hiphelpers.com  - which put the legs together at the top. The physical therapist simulated the hip helpers today by taking a stocking and wrapping it around the top of her legs in a figure 8 pattern. Sure enough, moments later she had her first little crawl!! She also sat and moved much better with her legs together.

  • DD is almost 10 months and not crawling. I'm not really worried about it because she's meeting all of her other milestones, but now I'm curious if it's because of the way she sits. She's been sitting unassisted since before 5 months, but when she sits her legs are spread so wide she's almost doing a split. Did the therapist tell you anything else about babies who sit like that and don't crawl?
  • Our foster daughter is in the same situation. She is hitting all her milestones, so she didnt qualify for follow up with the early intervention team. From your description, it sounds like she is sitting the same way our foster daughter is sitting.

    She gave us several suggestions.

    1. When they are sitting, put the toys to their side, rather then in front of them. This forces them to pivot, which they said is important.

    2. Also when she was sitting with her legs split, the therapist would take her knees and bend them next to one another (almost so the one leg was on top of the other........hard to describe, i guess!). This position, again, forces her to her side more and when she would reach for something, it would put her in a crawling position.

    3. Another suggestion was that when she is trying to crawl and her tummy is on the ground, pull her hips up a bit so that she is in the crawling position.

The therapist didnt seem concerned at all, but felt that it was important to teach her the correct way to sit, pivot, and crawl. I am going to take her measurements today and order the hip helpers. They are about $15 each and $22 for custom ones.

  • Thanks for the suggestions! She can pivot in a complete circle and can get down from sitting to laying, but definitely has a harder time since her legs are usually so far apart. Now that I know what the problem may be, I'll definitely work on those things. Thanks!
