Newborn: how much sleep are you getting?

How much sleep are you/were you getting with a newborn?  I'm getting about 6 hours a night on average but it's so broken up.  An hour here, a couple there.  I start and 10:30 and end at 9 just to get that much sleep.  LO takes forever to feed then about 40 minutes to burp and soothe to get him to go back to sleep.  He sleeps much better during the day: regular 3-4 hour stretches.  Is this normal?

  • Sounds like my LO on some of the days. Try to get some sleep while he's sleeping in the day, that will make a world of difference. GL

  • 7-8 hors.

last night I got a 5 hour stretch! i was thrilled

  • Yeah, in the beginning I would stay in bed some days until 11 just to sleep more because he was sleeping. It takes a while until you can function before 8 a.m. but it'll feel better soon.  Just take it as it is now.

  • sounds pretty normal.  my DD was getting up twice a night for the first week or so.  now she gets up once around 1 or 2 then not again until 6 or 7.  feedings will get shorter as you get into a rhythm .  definitely sleep/rest when LO does during the day!

  • We co-sleep and breastfeed so once Pres is down for the night around 9 or 10, we're in bed until 8 or 9 the next am. She usually naps again at 10-12 and maybe from 3-7. We get lots of time. We're lucky.
