Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Stiffening legs while grunting and crying in pain...but

...it's not constipation since he has green diarrhea.

Anyone else's baby have this probem or have had this problem in the past?  I feel so bad for my little guy.  He goes through episodes where he stiffens and grunts and groans and screams/cries, and then 5 mins later he is ok.  I spoke to the nurse earlier in the week and am going to call my doc again tomorrow.

Could this be an after effect of the rota vaccine?

Does he arch his back when he grunts? Could he have silent reflux?

  • i would definitely call ped about it. i asked bc DD was throwing up a lot more than usual (she got the rotavirus last monday) and they said diarrhea was more the side effect of the vaccine...i would keep an eye on him and have the ped see him tomorrow

I don't think it's reflux, although I guess it could be.  I kind of notice it more when I can tell he's trying to go to the bathroom that's why I initially was thinking it was constipation.  poor guy.

I had asked the nurse about this earlier in the week when I talked to her and she totally brushed me off about it being a side effect to the vaccine, I will definitely talk to pedi tomorrow rather than just a nurse.  I just feel so bad for him, and so helpless, I just want to make him feel better.

i totally understand. i HATE when the nurses brush you off. there is one nurse who is understanding but no nonsense and now i always ask to speak to her personally.

  • Could it be a dairy or soy allergy? Not allergy but a reaction to something you ate. My LO gets stiff legs and cried w/ dairy & soy ;( makes me want to cry.

  • Diarrhea can be a side effect of the roto vaccine. And my pedi said that a lot of babies deal with the cramping by doing exactly what your baby is doing. But I'd still call again! Better safe than sorry, right?
  • DD does this often during the day, but has for about a month. It only lasts a few minutes and then she's fine. She was diagnosed with silent reflux. Our pedi prescribed Zantac for her but it made her throw up, which she was not doinf prior so now we just deal with it. Gripe water seems to help a little.

I was wondering about this, but I haven't changed my diet at all and have been eating the same types of foods for almost 12 weeks now....unless he's just recently developed it, which is certainly possible.

This is good to know - I will keep this in mind when I talk to the pedi.

  • I am really sorry that I can't remember exactly what I'm about to refer to so it's going to sound vague and I don't want to alarm you but I read a blog that was posted on here recently regarding a child who didn't make it due to a condition of something in the GI tract (that almost everyone survives though with treatment!!)- the symptoms were exactly what you are describing. I am only posting this so that you demand to talk to a pedi and not your idiot nurse about what this could be...I'm sure it's nothing though! (we didn't do rota so I can't help you there)??

Whoa. I know you're just trying to help but the symptoms that the OP is describing can also be colic (which peaks between 2-3 months) or reflux. If you can't remember the story you are vaguely referring to, you shouldn't post something like that, imo.

OMG - Thanks for posting, any idea what the blog link was?  Interesting that you opted against the rota - we actually went back & forth about not doing it and finally decided to do it...

    ?

This is what I was referring to- so sorry that I needed to find it while I was pumping this morning. I'm SURE it's colic, but I did want to pass this on:
