Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Anyone else's DC being watched for head size?

DS has always had a really big head. I think it usually has measured in the 95th percentile. We had an appointment yesterday and it measured in the 99th, now the pedi wants us to come back in 6 weeks and if it's still growing at a faster rate we may have to see a specialist.

The pedi  said that in 10 years he's only had to refer two kids to specialists and both turned out fine. Has anyone else had something similar happened? Where did it end up going?

  • I don't have an answer, but we are in the same boat....

  • Just curious - what percentile is the rest of your kiddo? I also think that jumping a few percentile points whether in head size or weight isn't a big deal since a tiny difference in measurement can mean a big jump/drop in percentiles.  I don't know about your pedi's office, but mine doesn't exactly do the world's most careful measuring.

My kiddo has a 95th percentile head and the rest of him is usually about 50-60th percentile.  It's never been noted as a concern because it's always been huge - and if you saw his dad and grandfather, you'd know exactly where he gets it!

His weight is also 95th percentile and his height is about 50th. They measured his head twice though, and the second time they did it very carefully. I'm really thinking it's nothing and they're just trying to be thorough - just kinda sucks to have to wait 6 weeks!

  • I wouldn't worry too much.  Unless he had a crazy jump like 50th to 99th in two months, I can't imagine that'd there would be a problem.  Some kids just have big heads!!  Does suck to have to wait and worry though.
  • Yup- our pedi pays close attention to the growth of Robbie's head. We've already seen specialists to rule out a few things and luckily so far it just seems like he's got a big head :)
  • The pedi that saw my DD in the hospital came in my room the morning after she was born, 6:30 am (apparently they do rounds insanely early) and told me her head was quite large.  At the time, I was like...uh, yeah...I'm aware.  I pushed that sucker for 2 hours and 15 min, thank you very much.  He went on to say that it COULD be hyrdocephalus, or water on the brain.  But because he felt that she was thriving (approx. 12 hours old at this point) he called it benign.  It scared the bejeebus out of me.

My pedi has reassured me 1000 times that she does not agree with the hospital pedi's observation.  However, my DD's head has been 95th percentile every time (45 1/4 cm at 6 months), and I still worry.  But she's thriving... so I try to keep it in perspective.  And her Daddy has a big noggin.

Anyway, I'm rambling, and not really answering your question, but wanted to at least give you the name of something they might be thinking about...  but please, if you are concerned at all, ask your pedi for more information.  A stranger on the internet can do more harm then good.  But I wanted to share my situation.

Thank you! I did ask my pedi what this might indicate and he was kind of vague with me. I think he didn't want to freak me out or something like that. Really I'm not too stressed over it, I was just kind of taken aback that it might be an issue! His head looks normal to me!

  • Our LO also has 95th p head size, 50th p for length, 20th for weight.  Our pedi remarks on it but not like she's worried.

Stay at home mom to a house of boys: two amazing stepsons, 12 and 9, and our 4 year old.

  • Her 9 mo appt will be next month so I will see if he says anything then but at her last appt, the nurse had to re-measure because she thought she was off the first time.  Turns out my DD just was off the chart.  Huge head...  I say it is the big brains :)
