They say that although the chances of getting a parasitic infection from eating sushi are slim, the consequences are severe enough that you wouldn't want to take the risk.
Parasites live in the meat of raw fish. While sushi chefs are very careful, that doesn't mean they detect every single parasite. And because pregnancy suppresses your immune system, you're much more susceptible to serious illness from any food-borne organism.
A parasitic infection probably couldn't get through the placental barrier, but a parasitic infection could give you liver or gastrointestinal problems that might then affect your baby. Some parasitic infections can lead to anemia or serious malnourishment in the mother or even cause miscarriage.
Agree. They dont want you to have too much mercury but I think more than that its jsut that there is such a high risk of getting sick from eating raw fish,.
Though when I was pg my OB told me I could eat it in moderation like everything else, just to make sure I go to a reputable place that I have been to before and never had a problem.... dont go to a rest. with anything but an A rating obviously!
I didn't see the post either but I think post could potentially pose a problem although it's small...Raw fish because of the weird bacteria that could be in it and mercury because you can only have so many servings of it so often...I think!
ok, so then it sounds like no one should really be eating sushi. i mean pg or not i really don't want a parasite.
what about the non-raw fish ones, like california rolls?
THose are fine in pregnancy in theory. In actuality, most places make them on the same places they make the raw fish ones, so caveat emptor.
And, really, you have to remember the issue with teh parasites is that your immune system is suppressed when you are pregnant. Listeria that wouldn't bother you otherwise because life-threatening in pregnancy.

I think those are okay. And some places will cook the fish for you before they roll it if you ask nicely. One of my pg friends has that done for her all of the time at a place she goes to.
I love California rolls. My OB actually told me to eat shrimp twice a week because I hate all other fish and she said the DHA was good for me and the baby. She did say to avoid fish with high mercury content, but I didn't pay attention to which ones because I wouldn't eat them anyways.
True that you gotta be careful where you're eating your sushi all the time, but of course one needs to be particularly cautious during pregnancy.
Yes, please don't eat here...not very sanitary.
That was supposed to be for my DH's eyes only! How much did he sell you the picture for? Is he spending the money on a bday present for me? Is it shiny? I forgive him.

Any of the california rolls or cooked ones are fine.
