BFing and daycare question

Nolan isn't in a traditional daycare program, but he is being watched by my MIL and FIL while I'm at work (they are retired). I send BM for his bottles every day, and MIL has been writing down his feeding times and amounts for me.

When Nolan was home with me on ML, he was eating every 2-3 hours. The last few days with MIL he's been eating every 4 hours, usually a 4 or 4.5 ounce bottle. I'm wondering if he's eating enough during the day?I find it odd that he suddenly went from 2-3 hours to 4 hour stretches between feedings.

Maybe he's able to get more out of the bottle faster so he's able to go longer? Or maybe he just prefers the breast and is willing to wait until I get home to eat more? He has woken up more at night the last couple of days to feed.

Any thoughts on what might be going on, BFing Moms?

Re: BFing and daycare question

  • It is very common for nursing babies to eat less during the day and make up for it at night.  It's called Reverse Cycling.  As long as he continues to be happy and is gaining weight, I wouldn't worry about it at all.

  • DS did this also.  He definitely prefers the breast over the bottle!  I can still walk in the room if he's being fed from a bottle and he will stop eating.  When I go to pick him up, he immediately puts his head in my boobs.

I did a little research and read that a lot of babies do this.  There was a "technical term" for it but can't remember what it was.

I wish I could give you some tips about him not waking up in the middle of the night to eat but we are still dealing with this.

  • DS does this. He eats very little when I'm not there to nurse. Sometimes he'll go 5 or 6 hours without eating. Sad I always try to squeeze in extra nursings as much as I can when I am working.

  • this doesn't happen to me but I know it is common.  he may be waking up to catch up on calories which makes for long nights and work days.
