  We have the same situation.  So DH bought a 2x2, and cut it to the same height as the banister.  Then he covered it in spare carpet that matches our lr carpet.  He then zip tied it to the banister (w/ clear zip ties), and then anchored the gate into that.  So the gate is anchored to the wall on one side, and the 2x2 on the other, eliminating the need to screw into the banister.  It works GREAT, and it doesn't look half bad, either.  We were going to get the kidco gate, but it was more expensive, and I actually found more positive reviews about the Evenflo.

  I have the same setup.  At the top of the stairs it is recommend to have a hardware installed gate as a pressure mounted is not as secure.  So we got the Kidco Angle mount wood safeway gate by Kidco. https://www.kidco.com/main.taf?erube_fh=kidco&kidco.submit.gateDetails=1&kidco.modelNumber=G32&kidco.bc=gc Our stairway opening is wider than usual so this was perfect.  it is adjustable so no extra extensions were needed.  Then we got the stairway installation kit K12 https://www.kidco.com/main.taf?erube_fh=kidco&kidco.submit.gateDetails=1
