You have to secure them with the seat belt each time you put them in the car. The seat belt goes in the slats on the infant seat so it straps it in over the top of the seat. Does that make sense?
Would this be an acceptable way for the grandmas to transport the babies if they HAD to go somewhere during the day (they are splitting the weeks as our caretakers)?
My MIL was talking about having extra bases here for her to put in her car in case there was some sort of 'emergency' but I'm not comfortable with that after hearing how difficult it is to install them - especially if she considers it an 'emergency'! Or if she were to want to stroll the mall with them or something I guess.

Yes, if it is done correctly it would be a safe alternative for grandmas. That is what my MIL did for the few times she had to transport my dd.
Thanks for the help ladies! I just got off the phone with my mom - who apparently knew this all along. DUH. That's probably pretty much how I was strapped in when I was a baby.
LOL- yes, this is how all car seats used to be strapped in. I'm not sure when it changed but in 1998 I had a job where we used to work with carseats a little and they were all strapped in by the seatbelt!
Yes, we did this when we went on vacation last summer. We didn't want to have to bring any additional things with us. It take a few minutes to get the carrier secure in the belt, but it can be done.
