AT still will not hold a bottle or cup. I have made the decision that I am switching him off the bottle completely. NOT the milk just the bottle.
Last night I did a test to see if he was really hungry and wanted the milk or just wanted to suck. He is usually pretty tired and cranky about and hr bf bed and thats when he gets a bottle. When he finishes hes raring to go again. Lately he doesnt finish it and leaves a little more than half.
So last night when his urge kicked in, I went down and poured the milk in a cup. He still wouldnt hold it but he drank from it. He drank about half and then just wanted to play. He went to bed fine and didnt get up in the middle of the night or anything, he also woke up fine this morning.
What kind of had me bothered was his diaper was almost dry this morning.....he had almost a full cup of diluted juice at dinner then half the bottle right bf bed. He ALWAYS wakes up soaking! Should I be over concerned about that or just see what happens? I guess it was just strange more than anything.
So far this week I have asked DC to give the afternoon milk in a cup so he can practice. Well this morning I told them to do that for bfast too. Give the milk in a cup with his bfast and see how he does. I still take the bottles in just in case he throws a fit....but Im trying by best to switch it over. I just think if we dont try with the cup more than a few times a day hes never going to get the hang of it. I guess for dinner Ill do the same thing. Offer the milk and what he doesnt finish he can have bf bedtime. Time will tell.
Does anyone else have any other ideas or tips for this?
Re: Switching over to a Cup
My son hated sippy cups so I started just giving him one with water in it to play with. We would sit on the floor together and i would let him grab the cup by the handles and I gently put the spout in his mouth and then let go. I would then give him lots of praise and he would get sooo excited. Now he can hold the cup and he puts it in his mouth by himself but he doesn't' understand that he has to tip it to get the liquid out. I also found that he only likes the nuby cups with the soft spouts. He simply refused the playtex and avent ones I have. You also might want to try a cup with a straw. Some babies do better with these.
I know this can be very frustrating. I think the more fun the transition is for them, the easier it is. If he is having a hard time with the cup, you might want to try buying a standard size playtex Ventaire bottle. This was the only bottle my son was able to hold himself for a while. Then once he gets the hang of that you could try the cup again. Good Luck!
