Toddler Beds

When did you move your child to a toddler bed? B will be 2 in a month...H and I are in disagreement over what to do with him,

The crib he currently sleeps in is a convertable crib still in crib form. H wants to move B to a bed, and use the crib for baby X.

The problem I have is B is a crazy sleeper. He still sleeps in a sleep sack because he moves all over the place. side to side, front to back, stomach, back, it is insane. Which leads me to believe he is not ready for a bed yet, even with rails on it.

any experience with age as far as making the transfer? Also, anyone have similar experience with their child and getting them to break this habit?

Re: Toddler Beds

  • My friend just moved her 18 month old son to a toddler bed. He was jumping out of the crib. My sister did when my nephew was 2.

  • The timeframe is a bit fuzzy but I think we moved her right before her 2nd birthday because she kept climbing out.  We originally converted her crib to the toddler bed and she just looked so big and uncomfortable in it that a week or so later we ended up buying a double bed.  We might've done a twin at that time but we were able to get an almost brand new double mattress set from my sister so it just made sense.

She's always been a little crazy sleeping but the side rails have worked really well.  I wasn't sure at first how the rails would work but honestly they're bigger than I thought they would be and there's really only a small open part.  As far as transitioning, I don't have a ton of advice as we've had a rough road.  For a few months she was wanting to sleep on the floor no matter what we did.  Consistency paid off on our part as we kept going in and putting her back in the bed and now she's finally sleeping in her bed... all night long.  Knock on wood!  Best of luck!

  • ^ question re: the crazy sleeping.

On the bed, do you use sheets tucked in the way adults would? I can't picture mine staying under the covers.

Or do you just let her sleep how she sleeps?

  • She does have a whole bedding set (bottom, top sheets and a comforter).  Every night she starts out all cuddled up in it and by the morning she's totally out of it turned sideways, etc.  It used to be way worse but she's actually gotten better with age.
  • ryan will move once this next baby is born into a twin sized bed.  i'll be buying an extra long bed rail b/c he too is a CRAAAAAZY sleeper.  for now i will just have a sheet and no top sheet or blanket (it's too hot right now for that anyway) and in the winter he'll just sleep with the fitted sheet with a sleep sack on.  i figure he'll just have to learn to stay in the bed and if he falls out, that's how he'll learn.  i'll of course have mega padding in case he does fall out, but i hope with rails it will keep him contained.

  • Our goal is to have our new one in the bassinet till he/she is 4 months old and than move Jack into a bed at 22 months. So just a few months shy of his 2nd birthday.
  • We moved Gabriella to a toddler bed when she was about 2.  She had already been able to climb out of her crib for months though she did actually sleep in it fine up until about 2 y/o.  She is also a crazy sleeper, but the toddler bed has a half-rail that has kept her in bed (though she did actually fall out once after we first got started -- but at least it's not far from the ground and now I put a pillow on the floor there--just in case).  We didn't have to do anything too special in the transition as she was excited about her new bed; however, she does sometimes want to sleep in her crib rather than the toddler bed and vice versa.  GL!
