So, how exactly does one pass on genetic info to a donated egg?  Did I sleep through that part of science class?

Zipping up my flame retardant suit... there should be an age limit on access to fertility treatment. A woman's fertility naturally begins to decline at 35. If you wait until your late 40s or your 50s to ttc, you probably are not going to be successful, unless you can afford a lot of fertility treatment and donor eggs. Waiting until 60 or older to try to have a child is just plain irresponsible. The odds that this woman will live to see her child grow up are slim to none. What kind of life is THAT for a child? Female life expectancy in the UK is about 81 years. Would YOU want to be that child, born to a woman unlikely to live to your 10th birthday?

This woman has decided that something is lacking in her life and is trying to fill it with a child, when the time for that is long past. The article states that she has never been in a serious relationship. Is she even emotionally equipped to handle parenting? How does someone get to be 72 without ever being in a serious relationship?

I am all for fertility treatments helping people become parents, but I think there do need to be responsible, ethical limits to that. Inserting 6+ embryos during IVF (a la Octomom) is unethical. Doctors helping a 72 year old ttc is unethical.

  • Sorry, but that's just wrong.  Tongue Tied

  • I agree w/ mcgee.  And will add that I don't think any doctor should be doing IVF on a 72 year old woman.  I think the doctor's giving her the treatments are just as irresponsible as the woman receiving them.
  • Interesting timing--an article on yahoo today about the world's previous "oldest mom" dying 3 years after giving birth to twins at 66 years of age.

It says in that article that the IVF clinic she used had an age cutoff of 55 (she lied and told them she was 55). Still though...55?? I just can't see how that is healthy for mom or baby(ies)...

I am reminded of playwright Wendy Wasserstein. She spent years and in excess of $100,000 to get pregnant as a single woman in her late 40s. And then she died of cancer and left her little girl alone and parentless at age 6.
