TTC after 35

I'm just confused

Hi all, I've lurked here for a while, but haven't posted much. Today, I am feeling confused.... and felt the urge to post. I am 37. Have one child, who is 8. I have not used any form of bc since he was 3 and nothing has happened. Always felt that if it was meant to happen, it would happen. Now, I have strong maternal instincts jumping out... I want another child. But then I look at others my age with kids going into high school and I wonder what I am thinking. Is it going backwards to have a baby now? I wonder... but at the same time, I KNOW a baby would be a huge blessing, one I KNOW I am ready for. DH says he is fine either way, having another child or not, if it makes me happy, he's happy. If I told him today that I was pregnant, he'd be thrilled. But to go through charting, etc. I think is something he doesn't want to do. So, in that sense, should I push forward now? My OB said a few months ago that as soon as I was ready to give her a call and she would put me on Glucophage immediately and felt it would do the trick. All I need to do is make that phone call, but I am scared. Don't know why, but I am. Thanks for letting me vent.

  • Sorry you are feeling confused. Few thoughts for you.

    1. IMO, charting  is a magnificent tool that is non invasive, and helps you know exactly what is going on in there. Would your DH rather have you go on drugs that you may not need before knowing what's going on in there?

    2. Thats said, given you haven't gotten PG with 6 years of unprotected sex, I think if you probably are correct to consult your primary care physician. However, don't let her/him prescribe ANYTHING without doing some testing first. And Metaform is a big, powerful drug not to be taken lightly. Why Metaform? You must have a history of something?

GL to you. TTC at any age can be scary, but the outcome is well worth it I think :)

  • First of all, welcome, I'm glad you delurked.  Not having gotten pg after 6 years could scare anyone. Sometimes it is more difficult to hear that there is a problem.  But it sounds like your OB suspects that something is up if they are wanting to go right to some meds. I would make sure you get some testing done first to find out what is really going on.

As far as wanting a child now...well this is a board for folks over 35 TTC so we all must be a little crazy..lol

Charting takes just a few seconds each day and doesn't really have to involve DH, it will give you some insight into your body. And my DH didn't know I was charting until I told him I was 3 months into it. He thought it was cool.  Good luck!

  • Welcome!

Your husband doesn't really have to deal with charting; it's more of a one person thing.

Also,  it's been 5 years of unprotected sex and you haven't gotten pregnant. On one hand that could be a problem but then on the other hand you could have just missed your timing all those months.  If you have wonky cycles like me it's absolutely possible that's why you haven't gotten pregnant yet. Charting could help this.

Anyway,  obviously talk to your Dr but I would 100% recommend charting as an another tool to help you get pregnant.

  • Welcome to the board.  I would definitely suggest charting.  It will just give you a better idea as to what your cycles are like.  Also, your DH doesn't have to do anything involved with charting.  I'm guessing since your OB wants to put you on Glucophage there must be some medical history that she feels this is what you need.  If it is and you really want another child I say go for it.  I think you'll also be surprised how many parents out there you'll run into that are also around your age with very young kids too.

  • Thanks for the support! It's so good to be able to talk to people that are honest! In the past, my OB confirmed that I have PCOS. I had an ultrasound of my ovaries, and she said that everything looked great, no reason to not try to get pregnant. It's then that she suggested Glucophage. This was about 5 months ago. She told me to make sure it's what I wanted to do and let her know, she thought that would be the first step.

Thanks everyone, I think charting should be my first step. Looking at my little ticker, it says I should be at the end of the cycle, but I am pretty sure I haven't even ovulated yet!

  • Hi and welcome.  I think that your feelings about having a baby at your age are completely normal.  But I am sure that if you already have an 8 year old, then you are well equipped to handle a new baby.  Absolutely you are not too old!

Ditto what the others said about charting.  Even if it doesnt get you K/U it will give you good info to share with your drs about your cycles.  I would start that before starting the glucophage.

  • I can't really add anything that hasn't already been said other than welcome to our happy little group.
