another organic milk question

Okay so I just started my son on milk and we bought Horizon organic milk.  It says that it doesn't expire until August 15th.  Is that date just a sell by date and it only stays good for 5-7 days after you open it?  Or does that mean it is good until that time even if you open it July 5th?

 Hope this makes sense!

Re: another organic milk question

  • It's good 7 days after you open it, and you can open it up until about august 8th.

It goes bad pretty fast for some reason.  Once your baby gets accustomed to it though, you will go through a half gallon in 7 days no problem.  BUT if you opened July 5th, time to throw it out.

  • Usually it's the sell-by date and you can still drink it days after that date. As long as it looks and smells normal I don't even bother with the dates. You can tell when it goes bad. You can open it whenever.
  • Hmmm...well ours usually lasts about two weeks.  I just go by smell though.

no,...It says right on there. Use within 7 days of opening. It's the open date, not the sell by.

  • Well we use Organic Valley. I just went to check and ours doesn't say use within 7 days and it says "sell-by" on it. So maybe different brands are...different. Ours truly lasts about 2 weeks and I also drink it so I know it's alright. Unless there is some unwritten rule about how long organic milk lasts ??
  • Is this going to turn in to an e-brawl over how long milk lasts?

I was wondering the same thing- I keep checking back to this thread to see how far it is escalating... obviously I'm bored...

  • An e-brawl over milk. That would be hilarious!

  • I really didn't want to start an e-brawl over spoiled milk!  I guess I will go half way with the different advice and trash it after 10 days or if it starts to smell bad!
  • The reason for the long expiration dates on organic milk:

Most organic milk that comes in 1/2 gallon paper cartons is ultra-pasteurized to give it a longer shelf life, but yes it still should be used within 7ish days of opening.

Organic milk that comes in full-size plastic gallon jugs generally is NOT ultra-pasteurized, it is just your plain old pasteurization process. If you buy this kind of milk you'll notice that it's usually just dated for no more than 7-10 days from when you buy it, just like regular non-organic milk.

  • ditto what CleoKitty said about ultra-pasteurized or not.. But damn eowynmn, you make me child seem like a crazy milk guzzler! LOL DD goes through a gallon about every 5 days! I wish we could last 7 days on 1/2 gallon.. that would be wonderful ;)
