1st Trimester

If you are thinking of going un-medicated

My advice is to start your research & reading now. I knew this was something I wanted to do, but didn't start to seriously do some research until 22ish wks. I wish I had started sooner. Ina May Gaskin's book and "Pushed" are really good, but there are so many more. Good luck!

  • And be sure to talk with your OB about his/her feelings and practices on important subjects as soon as possible.  Don't wait until 3rd tri to find out that your doctor has a very different view on things like c-sections and inductions  :)

Amen! I'm debating switching now, but I feel like it's so far in! I love my OB, but had I started doing my research earlier I probably would've looked into a midwife from the start.

I may have chosen a different OB/midwife. I would have asked my OB questions way earlier to determine her practices/beliefs when it comes to things like pitocin, C-sections, early induction, etc. These are things I didn't think too seriously about prior to my research. Obviously, there's a chance I may still need some of these things, and you can never really predict what's going to happen come the day, but I would have asked more/better/different questions of my OB from the start.

  • I'd like to go completely natural, but I don't really know when to start addressing this with my OB. She actually won't be the one doing the delivery (she has twin 8-year-old boys!), but she is going to hand select someone to hand me off to when it gets much closer to delivery time. I guess I'll ask her when I see her in a week *shrug*
  • Thanks for the book suggestions! I had an epi to deliver DD, but have always wanted to try naturally. My mom delivered both my sister and I w/out meds, and I felt like I got the epi last time mainly to make DH feel better. I'm also curious about hypno-birthing and am going to try to read a bit about that. Fortunately, I feel like the hospital where we are is generally pretty open to different styles. I know it depends on the OB, but I also feel it depends on the hospital. For example, there's a fantastic women's hospital in the city, but it's huge and I've heard many women say that they're quick to jump to C/S as a solution. We're at a smaller hospital, and I didn't feel I was at all pushed to use meds, etc. I really liked that I felt like everything was my own choice (okay, so maybe DH's choice as well ;)

  • I highly recommend watching "The Business of Being Born"- I rented it through Netflix.  It was produced by Ricki Lake after being disappointed in the birthing experience with her first child.  Lots of pretty shocking info- very home birth focused, but a good watch!
  • My mom delivered all four of us at home so I've always thought I would have a natural birth. I also watched "the business of being born" and it was amazing! It definitely opens your eyes to things you may not know about birthing. I'm reading "The thinking woman's guide to a better birth". I highly recommend it!?
  • I'm going to add: the book Your Best Birth is good, as well as anything in the Sears Parenting Library, and Birthing From Within.

And don't take the hospital birth classes. Although I'm sure some hospitals do a good job of explaining non-medical ways to relieve pain, most do a poor job of it. Take a Bradley class, or read Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way, or take a Hypnobirthing class (or get the books/cds). This is my Bradley instructor's resources site, lots of good websites and books.

But most importantly, be informed. Even if you don't want to go all natural, at least know what an epidural does exactly and what some side effects may be. Know what inductions are like and when they are necessary and when they aren't.

I could go on and on....I'm working on getting more of my thoughts in my personal blog.
