3rd Trimester

Kinda 1st tri questions-but i'm posting on behalf of a friend

Hi All,

I fortunatly have never experienced this but I have a friend asking my advice and I dont have any to give.

She is about 13 or so weeks pregnant and experiencing really bad migraines.  She does not know what to do to make the pain go away as tylenol is not helping.  Her doctor unfortunatly is out of town for the week, so I told her I would try this route.

 TIA

  • Can't see ask to see another physican in the practice?

  • I think she can take Excedrin migraine. I think it is on my list of approved meds.

  • My doctor told me that if Tylenol didn't make my headache go away, it meant my blood pressure was the cause and to check my blood pressure.....
  • I would ask to see another doctor.  Migraines can be a sign of high BP and other issues.

Exactly.. tell her to check her Blood Pressure. And ask another phisician what she could take

  • I would say to tell her to call her doctors office anyway...they probably have an on call doctor that can help her. I wouldnt take anything else...or try at home treatments. If her ob office isnt able to help her I would call my General or family doctor and see what they say.
  • A glass of regular Coke can really help too.

Excedrin Migraine has ASPiRIN in it.  I know because this was my staple for aborting headaches pre-pg.

She could try going to an urgent care center, espicially if the migraine has lasted more than a day.

  • I had awful migraines early on too.  I tried everything short of narcotics as suggested by my doctor.  I also tried chiropractic which didn't work either.  Finally, I went for a massage and that was the only thing that worked. I haven't had a headache or migraine since!

Massage can also be paid for with flexible spending dollars, ask your OB to write a generic prescript for it if you have an account to use.  GL to her!

  • I got really terrible migranes throughout the entire pregnancy - like hiding under the covers in the dark crying kind of migranes, usually at least once every other week or so. I am still getting them, and they are awful. There is, unfortunately, almost nothing you can do - you CANNOT take Excedrin migrane or anything else like that, except for Tylenol, a cup of strong coffee, and some time spent in a quiet dark room.

I feel for your friend. This has been the bane of my pregnancy ...

  • Call her dr. even if he is out of town for a week, he should have someone covering for him. I expereinced this and was able to get some drugs called in that helped they did not make it go away 100% but they def. helped.
  • i agree that she should definitely see her dr. about BP issues, but just to reassure her a bit, i have horrible migraines.  i haven't had them but a couple times during pregnancy, but when i was about 13 weeks along, i had headaches that just would not go away and i hurt every time i moved, but they weren't migraines - and of course, tylenol is as effective as stupid robitussin.  they eventually just went away, and i think it was more just about hormones (and probably giving up caffeine cold turkey).  so, tell her to hang in there - but yeah, definitely check the BP, too.
  • Thank you all for your responses I told her to call an on call dr as well but apparently no one is in until later this afternoon....I have passed on all your advice and i'm sure it will help her!

  • I got migraines all through my first trimester.  My doctor perscribed something for me.  Tell her to see if she can see another doctor.  If not, then drink a half can of coke....the caffeen might help.  Sometimes a combination of the coke and some extra strength tylenol helped.  But there are perscriptions out there that she can take....just not the regular migrain meds.

Like PP said, DO NOT tell her to take Excedrin Migraine. It's NOT okay while pg. She needs to see a doc - could be PIH.

I have had migraines my entire life which I used to take excedrine migraine for. My OB told me absolutely not to take it anymore while I am pregnant because of the asprin and some of the other ingredients. There should be someone else at the practice that can prescribe something for her, if not she may just have to tough it out with tylenol for the week until her doc gets back.

I was prescribed "fioricet" for them sice I have been pregnant and it works pretty well
