I just put my toddler in the regular plane seat and used the seatbelt. You know, I think (think) that the airline will not let you use the harness during take off and landing. they would let me use the Baby Bjorn during take off and landing (Southwest) when DS was an infant.
I don't know if they travel alot, but I have a safeseat go travel car seat. I love it. It folds up in a little travel bag, and then you have it for rental cares as well. It's about 200.00, so not worth it if you don't fly fairly often and have a kid that will fit in it forever like mine.
Everyone who talks about the CARES harness loves it.
I prefer to bring the carseat because: 1) My DD travels very well in her carseat. . . she knows it's her place to be so she's not tempted to get up. 2) We typically need a carseat on the other end of the trip anyway and 3) I know it's not getting banged around in the checked luggage if it's on the plane with me.
We used the Cares harness when we have flown with DS and love it. It is FAA approved for use during the entire flight, including take off and landing. The materials you get with the Cares recommend you bring the FAA certificate copy with you (which they provide) incase the flight attendant has any questions. We have flown with it on a few different airlines and had no problems -- all the flight attendants knew what it was.
Re: if you flew with your toddler
Are you talking about the CARES harness? https://www.kidsflysafe.com/
I've never known anyone who has used the harness.
We've flown with M many times and never used a carseat. She's always done fine.
The Cares harness, I think.
