3rd Trimester

just how unaccurate are u/s weight measurements?

Because she told me yesterday my little dude is nearly already 4 1/2 pounds.

.. I still have 9 weeks to go.

:gulp:

Re: just how unaccurate are u/s weight measurements?

  • I don't know an accuracy rate, but I've heard some measurements being pretty far off before.

  • I was told last week that our LO weighs 3 lbs.  I am curious to know how accurate this is myself!!
  • I don't know the *actual* numbers but people often say they can be 1-2 pounds off either way.
  • my u/s tech said that it sould be off by a half pound either way..my LO showed as being 6.5lbs last Wed!!!

  • Pretty inaccurate from what I've been told, but who knows? They've been trying to guess my LO's weight by feel alone at my last two appts. and it's making me crazy!
  • That's not bad... I mean, my MW said the baby should be gaining about a 1/2 a lb a week now.  So, that would put him at about 9lbs right?  Maybe he'll come a little early, too...
  • My LO was measuring 5.1 lbs at 32 wks and I'm betting is going to be about 6 lbs at Thursday's u/s.
  • My friend was told that her baby was about 7.5 lbs when she was 38w. At 40w she gave birth to a 10.5lb baby.
  • you sound right on pace to me - mine was 4 lbs 12 oz at 32 weeks. "They" say its about 1/2 pound a week from 32-40 weeks. But, "they" also say that the baby stops growing at such a high rate by 37 weeks or so. And rmember that if you don't have any issues, your body will rarely make a baby you can't deliver on your own.

    GL!

  • They can be off by approximately plus or minus 1 pound.  Mine was right on.  My baby was 9lbs and 7ozs at birth.

  • My doctor told me yesterday at my appointment that it could be off by 2 lbs either way. She is guessing that my baby will be anywhere between 8-9 lbs and we haven't done a u/s since 18 wks, but she is going off of what my son weighed when he was born and how big I am.
  • for my 37 week ultrasound with my daughter they measured her at 91/2 lbs. when she came out two weeks later she weighed 8 lbs and 1.5 oz. For my sister in law two little girls they were expected to weigh a little over 8 lbs for the first one and slightly under 8 lbs for the second. Both girls came out weighing right at 9 lbs. So, as far as i can tell it is a stickly an estimate.

    Good Luck

  • it's +/- .5 pound until week 34 or so and then it becomes +/- 1 pound.  It's definitely just an estimate - not accurate.

  • Mine just measured 6lbs. 8oz.  So I feel your pain!

     The u/s can be +/- 1lb I was told.

  • I don't know why they feel the need to tell moms-to-be the weight of their fetuses.  It's pointless information & oftentimes discourages them.  Tisk tisk.

  • They can be off by 1  - 2 lbs.  You'll 1/2 baby per week max - which only makes your baby 8 1/2 lbs plus or minus 2.
  • IMO they are fairly innacurate.  I went for an u/s a week and 1/2 before my c-section, and they estimated her to be 7.5 lbs and that she would probably be 8ish lbs by the time I had my c-section.

She was 6 lbs 9 oz.

  • My doctor told me +/- 1/2 a pound. It was accurate with my DD. Maybe every machine or tech does it differently though! Not sure :)
  • 3 days before DD was born, they did one and est. her to be 7 lbs 4 oz.  She was born 6 lbs 8.5 oz.  I heard they can be off by a pound.

Depends on what level ultrasound you got done. The more detailed ultrasounds (level 2) are about 1/2 a pound off,  and level 1 ultrasounds can be up to 2 pounds off.

  • I asked my doc at my last appointment when I would find out how much he was weighing.  She said that they won't do any u/s's or anything but could simply guesstimate the weight of the baby.  I told her that I keep hearing about all these ladies that know how big their babies are and she assured me that they can't pinpoint the actual weight, just make a guess and could be off by several pounds.

My friend just had her baby earlier this month and he was 10lbs 12oz!  They had NO idea he was that big!!
