3rd Trimester

When did the weight taper off?

Like I said, I'm not very concerned with how much I'm gaining, but how quickly I'm gaining it.

It's been piling on at 2-4 lbs PER WEEK for the past few weeks or so.  Let's just put it this way -- in the past 3 weeks, I've gained about 10 lbs.

The doctor isn't concerned since I gained so little until 22 weeks.

& I've read that a lot of weight gain piles on at the end of 2nd and begining of 3rd, which falls right in line with where I am.

But when did it taper off, for those of you that piled on the poundage pretty quickly?

Re: When did the weight taper off?

  • With my last pregnancy I gained all through 8 months and the last month I didn't gain a pound.

  • Loading the player...
  • I put on 10 lbs in 4 weeks during the 2nd tri.  That freaked me out!  All I could think about was that I'd be up 80 lbs by the time it was all said and done.

At my 36 week appt I hadn't gained anymore weight.  At my last appointment I actually lost 2 lbs.

  • mine has not tapered off. i have consistently gained around 2-4 pounds per week...im so over it. i look like a dead animal swollen on the side of the road.
  • Personally, I didn't gain much in 2nd tri, but I have put on the majority in the last few weeks.  Our class instructor said that MOST girls gain a HUGE amount in between the 28 and 32 week appt.  She said that it can average between 5-11 lbs. or more.  After that, it *should* start to slow down.  She said that keep in mind, that in 3rd, the baby is actually "fattening" up so that is ALL baby weight...in the beginning, it could be your weight, water weight, increased blood flow, etc. but in 3rd, the baby is actually doing the gaining. :) That actually made me very happy!
  • I gained most of my approx. 20 lbs during mid/late 2nd tri and very beginning of 3rd tri. I've noticed my weight gain has tapered significantly (small losses at my last two OB appts) even though my eating habits have remained pretty much the same.
  • I gained most of my weight in 2nd tri.  Plus I'm just not as hungry anymore.

I seem to be gaining nothing or very little now.

  • When I gained 50lb's with DS it never did taper. I wish it had. Then again, maybe if I would have watched what I ate it would have?

That is why I've been very diligent throughout this pregnancy not to overeat cause I ate my way through the first.

  • My weight (along with my insatiable appetite) has been tapering off the past a few weeks, I am at 29 weeks now. I was getting worried because at the rate I was going, I would have gained well over 50 pounds.
  • i was put on warning at 29 weeks to cool it on the weight gain.  Then at the 31 week visit i gained 2, and and at 33 i had gained none! YAY for me.  Plus now, i actually do get full really fast and can't eat as much anyways.
  • My OB said that from about 30w on is when the weight starts to taper off, or some women start losing weight b/c of how much the baby is gaining at this point (1/2 a lb. a week?!).  Mine stayed the same from 19w to 27w, and went down 2 lb. at my 31w checkup.
  • Mine FINALLY started to slow down around 29/30 weeks.

  • I had been consistently gaining a pound per week between weeks 14-25, but then put on four pounds in three weeks (weeks 26-29).  I have my three-week follow-up appointment this Thursday and am very curious if I'm still putting on four or more pounds. I don't feel I am eating more than normal because I get full fast, but when I crave the chocolate stuff, watch out!

Like Kendall, I put on 10 lbs. in 4 weeks during early 3rd tri, but my last appt was only a 1lb. gain. I'm hoping it stays at that pace for the remainder.

I didn't gain a single pound until 25 weeks, then I started gaining at the rate of about 2 pounds a week.  I ended up gaining about 30 total, but it was all in weeks 26-42.

  • I gained a lot very quickly, too and have been wondering the same thing.  I had gained 14 total at 26 weeks and here going on 31 weeks I've gained 23.  So, yeah, i'm not concerned with the total amount of weight, but the fact that I've gained 9 pounds in 5 weeks that has me concerned.  My doctor said that it will probably slow down around week 34? He doesn't seem overly concerned. I hope that's the case.

  • My weight gain really tapered off from 34w on.

  • At my last appt two weeks ago I was down one pound...however, according to my scale I have gained 5 since then.  I will find out at my appt in 2 hours!
  • I think I gained 11 pounds or so in a 4 week period at the end of 2nd/beginning of 3rd. Since then, I've gained a pound a week. I asked my OB about it tapering off and she was so discouraging- "Oh no! You'll keep gaining till the end! You may gain more in the last few weeks." But I know it does taper off and even end completely for some people- and I hope I am one of those people this time! :)

  • Mine seems to have tapered.  Or is at least going on much slower.  I'd gained 5 pounds by 20 weeks and then about 16 more over 2nd tri - I was freaking out and my doctor said I'd done so good in the beginning that she really wasn't concerned.  I still haven't hit the 25 pound mark that she gave me - I could gain a couple more over the next 4 weeks and be just at 25 pounds.  Which I think is a cruel joke God is playing on me - not pregnant, I look at an Oreo and 5 pounds goes on; pregnant, I eat 10 oreos and nothing.
  • Mine hasn't. I am still gaining but they tell me its water weight becuase I am so swollen.

  • Mine started tapering a couple of weeks ago, around 32 weeks. I gained nothing until about 18 weeks, and 25 lbs b/t 18-34 weeks.

I feel like I'm eating more often now, but that my portions are definitely smaller. And I'm back to craving both bad foods and healthy foods, so I'm balanced. (IE: ate at cracker barrel last night, and got chicken fried chicken, but salad and applesauce were the sides I chose.)

I'm also sucking water like crazy right now, and I think a lot of my weight gain in the heaviest period (around 28 weeks) was all the fluid retention.

Um, yeah. The Bump be too crazy for pics of my kid.
  • I gained 10 lbs. from 23-27 weeks, then at my last appt., 29 weeks, I actually lost a pound.  I'm curious to see how I'll do this week.  I'm glad to hear about everyone else gaining 10 lbs in a month early third tri.  I thought I was the only one.  It freaked me out since my eating habits have been pretty consistent.  I've gianed 27 lbs so far and hope I can maintain from here.

  • Around 35 weeks. My weight has been pretty much the same the last 2 weeks.

  • mine PILED on in 2nd tri. I gained 7 pounds in one month. In the last month, almost nothing. At my 35, 36, and 37 week appt, my weight was virtually unchanged. I think its b/c I can't eat as much anymore.

    I'm still gaining.

  • I went through a growth spurt like that too, and it really freaked me out!  I wasn't eating any more or exercising any less (in fact, I became extra vigilant about eating right and moving around), but I gained 10 lbs in 4 weeks.  It did slow back down to 1lb/week.  I don't remember exactly what weeks that was though.  I know it's unnerving, but your body is doing what it needs to do.
  • I have gained 44lbs, but I was down 2 at my last appt, so +42 as of last Wed..we will see tmw what the verdict is at this point. I had alot of swelling also since i was workin gon my feet 8+ hours a day...now that im just sitting on my fat azz, im sure some of the water weight will come off... Up until my 2lb loss last week, it was a constant massive gain...

  • I am kind of the same way. I didn't gain anything 1st tri, then in a month I gained 5, no biggie, then 8 pds, then 12!! But my last appt I "only" gained 8 pds...so I'm hoping that is the start of my tapering off...I'll see next week at my next appt. My doc isn't concerned even though I was overweight to begin with. All my other test results are great and they know I'm not binging on donuts all day. For me, I was hopeful that I could get through the pregnancy only gaining 20 pds (because i was overweight they said this would be a good number), but that hope was quickly snuffed out and I realized that my body will gain whatever its going to gain and I don't have much control over it.
  • I started losing weight (just half a pound or so) at each appointment starting at 38w.
  • I gained most of my weight in 2nd tri - I had one month where I gained 11 lbs.  I am up to 20 lbs now, and lost 1lb at my last appointment.  It will get to the point where you can't really eat much more bc there is no room left.
  • I'm only 26w3d, but my weight gain has started to slow down a bit...an eensy weensy bit. I lost about 25 lbs in first trimester (I was significantly overweight to start and had HORRID m/s). But then around week 18, I started gaining. I gained abotu 3 lbs a week (making up for lost time) up until last week, when I lost 3 lbs. Go figure. I bet I'll still gain more though...my body just hugs fat like a big ole' teddy bear. I'm a fluffy one...

I'm so glad to see this post.  This is me, lol.  I had only gained a small amount of weight, now suddenly in the last month I have gained 13 lbs.  I am dreading weighing in at my next appt on Monday.  I actually asked my doctor about this at my last appt (i had gone up 6 lbs in two weeks) and she told me not to be concerned because I hadn't gained much weight before hand, and also that some is likely water weight since my feet/ankles are now swollen like balloons.

I am definitely interested in seeing everyone's answers about when it tapers off... I really don't want to keep jumping up 2-3 lbs  every week for the next 8 weeks.

  • I haven't gained anything in the past three weeks.  So I guess it tapered off at around 35 weeks.
  • I gained 9 lbs between the weeks of 25-29 as Lo had a huge growth spurt and it has slowed down. I didn't start gaining weight until 20 weeks then it started piling on.
  • I've gained 4 lbs in the last 4 weeks.
