Is this name destined to be mispronounced or do you think people have heard it enough to know that it's prononced "eye-lah"? Any ideas for alternate spellings or do you like it spelled this way (assuming you like it at all, I guess
This has been discussed many times before. It is beautiful, but more than likely will be mispronounced quite a bit, even more so if you live in an area with many Spanish speakers ("ees-la").
I think any "easier" spelling would be ridiculous though, honestly. Islay is the name of the actual island, with Isla being the accepted female name variant. I'm not a fan of made-up spellings.
I think Isla Fisher- the actress- has really helped out with this one. I like the name and think it'll be fine to pronounce as long as people know the word island.
I think it will be mispronounced a lot by older people. I think with our generation most people will know how to say it and it is becoming more popular.
I absolutely love this name. DH and I had it in our top 5 or so for a long time. I would not worry about the mispronunciation thing. People will find a way to mispronounce anything if you let them. Just smile and correct them and you'll be good to go.
This name comes up often on here. I think that some people know how to pronounce it because Isla Fisher is famous right now. However, Isla as a name is actually very rare so it isn't a name that everyone has heard.
The problem is that Isla is a very common word in Spanish. It means island and it is pronounced "ees-luh." Since our country's Spanish-speaking population is increasing so rapidly, I think this one will be mispronounced a lot.
When I read it I will admit that I pronounced it as "Izla"
I did go to school with a girl named "Aiyla" pronounced the same way and a different spelling option could be that, but I do see it as a common mispronounced name.
my little sister is trying to push this name on me right now, lol...
it's very pretty and i think (hope) most people would know how to pronounce it. and i wouldn't let that determine your decision if it's in your top faves.
I love it, but my SIL's neice is Myla. We see her all the time, so it's a no go for us (and I tried REALLY hard to get my DH to agree). I think it's going to get mispronounced a lot, but it's unique and pretty. You'd have to go with a name like Sara if you wanted everyone to say it correctly.
I've never actually known how to pronounce this name- thank you for the education. NMS, but if you like it you should go for it! There's plenty of people on here who don't like my choices!
People are idiots. It will never cease to amaze me what they will mispronounce. I wouldn't use it as a name choice determinant.
I don't think that's totally fair. I've seen Isla Fisher's name in magazines but not being totally familiar with it I still thought it was Is-La not Eye-La...it's not like the pronounciation is obvious from the spelling if you didn't know it. But I do agree that if you like it pronounciation isn't a dealbreaker. She'll learn to correct people a lot but you get over it (I did, I have a unique name
I would have totally butchered the pronounciation. I've never really heard of it before, but I like that it's not too common, yet apparently not made up.
Re: Isla - opinions?
It's the only way I've seen it spelled. I think most people know how to pronounce it.
I LOVE it. It was one of my top choices for a girl name but we're having a boy.
Isla will absolutely be mispronounced. I like the name though, but would never use it because of the pronunciation issues.
ETA: People mispronounce common names like Leah and Caroline so they will mispronounce Isla!?

Sorry if that doesn't help any.

I love it!!
Another real spelling of the name is Ila. https://www.babynameshub.com/baby-names-girls/Ila.html
I prefer Isla.
LOVE it! I have known how to pronounce it for a long time too.
FWIW a lot of people misprounounce my daughter's name and she still loves it.
