2nd Trimester

In regards to baby clothing...

This is probably an incredibly stupid question, but I was reading the baby clothing sizes post and got to thinking - how do you figure out what "size" your infant is without buying the clothes already.  I mean...do people really "try on" clothes on their infants in the store?  Don't most of them come packaged/attached so that you can't do that?  This is probably my end-of-the-day brain meltdown but humor me... =P

Most clothes have weight/height ranges written on the tag somewhere. If not, some babies, not all, are usually wearing the size that correlates with the age they are.?

Eh, per the thread earlier, I guess this isn't the case a lot of the time.  That's why I was wondering.

I have honestly never thought about that! Good question.

  • If you're really doubting the size and holiding it up to your LO doesnt help, try it on.

Most go along with the weight height age of the baby. Alek is 22 months and is still able to wear most of his 18 month old clothing- He's average size- He was in premies for a while and born full term without complications. He was in his 0-3 at about 4 to 6 months and 3-6 months 7 to 10 months and 6-9 clothes 10 to 13 months and so on. Depending on how your child grows you can usually tell looking at the clothes or by trying them on-  even if you try them on at home and then bring them back to the store if they are too small. HTH-

  • Depending on the size of the baby at birth, you'll either get NB or 0-3. ?Buying clothes for babies is hard b/c you don't know exactly how they're going to grow.?

Layla was only 5 lbs 11oz when she was born, so NB was HUGE. ?I had to buy a few Preemie sized things that fit her. ?

Once you figure out what size fits them when they're first born, you just go from there. ?Once they start getting small, obviously you move up in sizes, lol. ?But so many things of Layla's were wasted b/c she was born in July, so people bought her 0-3 month Summer outfits.?

She was so tiny that by the time she could wear the 0-3 outfits, it was too chilly outside and so they were wasted. ?

  • Most clothing has the weight and length ranges for the size, and that is a little more accurate than the age. You just kind of have to do trial and error until you figure it out, which will happen pretty quickly. But I always just bring stuff home to try it on DD & if it doesn't fit I take it back (which I rarely have to do these days since she wears a 2T & the next size up is huge!)

  • i have been buying 0 to 3 month and 3 to 6 month because my dh is 6'3 and i am thinking the baby will be long and would rather have the clothes be alittle big then small. I may pick up a few nb things just incase but not until right before so i can return them if hes bigger

  • In my experience expecting a big baby and ending up with a preemie it is hard to plan ahead. If I knew then what I know now, I would be prepared with the basics and not waste my money on clothes that may or may not be used or have to be exchanged.

  • If I can't tell by holding it up and looking, then I read the height/weight part on the label.  I've never bought anything that was too small for DD by doing it this way.  This of course applies to when LO is already here.

As far as planning ahead... generally if you buy minimal NB size and have some 0-3 stuff around then you are likely to get some use out of it.  If you ever have to deal with needing preemie clothes, then you'll figure that out once LO gets here and just have to go buy some.

  • I don't know what packaged/attached means. I don't buy packaged or attached clothes for my son. I never have other than Carters onesies and side snap tees. Most clothes have the height/weight on the tag or you buy somewhere within their age range. Jack was pretty true to size. He would always go into the next size up about a week early and then the pants within the week or so of hitting that age range.
